I believe it was the hump at the end of the straight just before (the now castrated) Mulsanne corner.
Yes and No.
It was the hump that let 'dirty air' get under the car.
By dirty I dont mean scousers, or dirt, I mean unpredictable air flow, heat does things to air density as you know. A test driver flipped his Merc in testing the day before the event and landed back on the fuckin wheels!. The car was fucked obv, but they still had a spare for the event. Mercedes solution? A strip of Lead in the front spoiler.
And the reason DB didnt land back on his wheels and ended up in the forest was coz he was racing.....really racing. It could have ended up so different for him as he was making up real time, but all things considered, that is what motorsport is all about, you drive the car faster than it can handle...you lose. Well the designers do anyway.
I first met him well before that, it was an hour before his debut into F3 at Donnington. I have never, never, seen a man so ill looking. But the quality racing drivers have is that they can still keep it together under enormous, fuckin life threatening, situations. Freaks, the lot of em. But respect.
Still, I took him to my local boozer once, he was one booooring fucker, real hard work. A machine, not a man.
I meant where not what :D
And I'm an old hand at dirty air and the like, not only a die hard f1 fan but one of me former GPL buddies is an aerodynamics PHD...he has a fairly medium job just now, but all his mates who failed and flunked all have jobs at F1 teams, so I get all manner of excluslive news and shit way ahead of time, but pay for it in long lectures on all those ugly bits sticking out of the tops of GP cars, and ground effect and fookin CFD simulations.....clever cunt so he is, his maths is light years ahead of mine so he loses me in that most times.
Racing drivers are legendarily dull.
the theory is that anyone with the slightest hint of imagination or inteligence would instantly predict the eventual outcome of sitting in a small coffin surrounded by petrol doing 190mph up a clif face in belgium in the rain.
The FIA's Dr professor Sid Watkins, a consultant neurosugeon has stated severl times that he has never detected the presence of anything at all inside a racing drivers head that could be considered a brain :D
They also get confused by people who are not that way...hence the likes of Eddie Irvine (a spanner compared with any of us but a possitive F1 gobshite...and the only man I;ve seen get interveiwed on the grid at monza on 3 E's (not racing I might add) ) and juan pablo montoya, who's a proper geezer, get hated by all and sundry (that and their uncanny ability to wall the opposition and get away with no damage).
wait for the world cup to come around and my latent football gene wil awaken and I will swear and rant and rave like the rest of you for a few weeks. FFS I got sent home from school after NI got fucked out of the 82 WC cos I argued with the headmaster that the referee, however empowered and within his rights, was still a moron (not sure if it was the bare faced saying of it or the leading of a chant of the entire p7 class that tipped him over the edge tho).
EDIT: worth noting that I am going into the WC with no idea who to support other than England until the 2nd round when I'll have to find someone else.....prepare for strange choices and stranger match comments I should imagine.
