standing on street corners i said STANDING ON STREET CORNERS,we used to dream of standing on street corners when i was a lad,alls we had was a bloody field and a muddy one at that. and hooded cardigans,i had to do 28hrs a day 7 days a week down pit just so i could save up and buy a hood never mind the bloody cardigan. they dont know their born these days.

What needs to be taken into consideration is parental expectations and literacy.

Youths such as these and many of those I teach hang around on the streets, not reading and suchlike, because, within their wider families, they may well have not been encouraged to do so.

It is highly likely that there parents were never encouraged to do so, either.

Who is to blame then? The schools? The parents?

As is often the case, this kind of reporting takes away the onus from the parents. Ultimately, they should take responsibility for their children. It always irritates me when any decline in public behaviour is blamed on the schools.

However, a lack of attention paid to literacy amongst the previous generation would vertainly be a factor - ie, the parents of these children.

Christopher - Over 50% of the children at my school have reading ages below their chronological ages. It would be great if they did go and read . . . but many can't.

An example - why did Jermaine Pennant crash his car whilst at Arsenal, turn up pissed to training whilst at Birmingham City? A lad with far too much money, yes. An illiterate young adult, yes again.

nothing new there. kids have always been easily bored and some even hung out in gangs and been up to no good.

Sounds just like me and everyone I knew when I was a teenager. Nothing's changed.

hanging out and messing round is not the problem (unless you are an anal retentive Christian who can't handle ANYONE enjoying themselves ever). Kids have hung out since the dawn of time. The problem is them causing aggro for those who choose not to hang out. I dunno if that's getting to be more of a problem or not. The point about it being driven by their vacious image cults is a very good one actually. The only thing I'd add is that I feel awful for the American kids who have nothing better to do than hang out in a shopping centre (seems to be becoming a thing here too)....how sad is that....we used to go hang out to have peace and quiet away from annoying authority figures.....not set up camp slap bang in the middle of them.
