get yer Hoover out for the lads..

True* story - the first time i ever heard Blue Monday was in 1983 (on Radio 1, as it was back then, possibly spun by the Hairy Cornflake himself) while doing the vacuuming at my Nan's place. I would have been (quick calculation) 7 or 8 years old at the time yet I can still hear it clear as a bell, albeit with a lot of hoover noises at the same time. Great times.

* I said it was true, not that it was interesting...

Slave labour, an 8 year old hoovering, disgraceful.

You're very narky these days, Jem.

Something you wish to reveal to us?

It's cool: I did a very sloppy job and don't think I was ever asked to help out again.

Mind you, I never got out of other chores. the house didn't have any central heating in those days and no double glazing earlier, plus the electricity and the gas were on 50p meters. The number of times i had to venture out into the cold and dark clutching a lighter* in one tiny palm and a shiny 50p coin in the other, shivering and afraid...

*Yes, my family trusted my with pyrotechnical devices. I also used to run over to the local shop and buy cigarettes at this age. Thatcher's Britain was a very different place, i tells ya.

How old are you? My nan used to have a coal fire and a 50p meter for the telly!

I still remember the first time I heard Temptation. Looking out of my bedroom window hoping United would equalise against City. Stapleton sorted it :thumb:

The ripe old age of 30. And my grandfather still has a coal fire in his place. Which is bloody freezing most of the year round... although he never made me hoover the place, so he's alright by me.

Did the meter pay for the leccy or the licence fee?
