I've always noticed that many die-hard NO or Smiths fans are so spiteful towards R. Smith of the Cure. I realize the band members of the two bands had some sort of fall out with him (not sure what it was) but why do the fans carry it as well??? Please emplain as I have never understood this.

I find Smith's voice irritating, he sounds like a gust of wind could blow him over. I wouldnt say all NO fans hate him though, a lot of people on here love the Cure - its just personal preference really. I quite like some of their music.
read the lyrics ? listen to the tunes? for the most part one goes past passing judgement and sharp reflection to say either screw it or here is a possible (ace)answer.
the other sure stretches his pipes but can't often get past himself.

erm I think there's a SLIGHT gap between 15 (which is cool and dandy in many a country[1])...and whatever that freak had on his PC
[1]tho I'm sure sex between a 15 yr old girl and a 50 something puffball is frowned upon in any decent society.

I don't really hate him, but I think his musical gimmick is worn out and tired. I don't think the Cure should have returned after Disintergration. I think that was their last decent album. I like selected songs by the Cure, but they as a whole are not a band I'm an avid fan of.
I dislike his messy hair, his horrible lipstick application and his voice is starting to grate on my ears after all these years. The live show also wasn't so fabulous the last time they came to Houston - where I was dragged to it by a boyfriend who really had suck taste in music.
I never understood the hate for Robert Smith. I like the Cure just as much as I like NO. They're different, but I don't see why I should hate one just because I like the other.
Digi Mike may have had a homosexual fantasy crushed when Fat Bob turned him down for a blow job, so I heard. Call Fat Bob what you will but the man is consistent. These days I only listen to the Cure when they are in concert--live with me in the audience. I rarely play any of their music anymore. I'll buy their latest lp and give it one spin. If there is a Cure gig near me I will give it another spin while I drive or fly there. Live you get about three hours of great performance, about twice as much as New Order with half the mistakes. I take Entreat with me whenever I travel because it ia a great chill out lp to help me calm down and sleep. Sometimes carnage Visors.

They don't bother me enough to hate them. I quite liked some of their stuff in the early 80s (eg A Forest) but hated Love Cats and all that quirky crap
that haircut and the lippy might have been OK on a 20 year old but on someone who must be pushing 50 it's just plain silly 
the whiney, angsty vocals were OK in the 80s but now they are well passe

I've been a cure fan slightly longer than I've liked/heard of New Order (around '84 - sorry, I'm only 31) and still listen to them once a week or so. I've made quite a few comp CD's have a few bootlegs and have been to 4 shows. I've never understood this "feud" either. :\ohwell:
Don't hate Robert Smith, per se, but am still flummoxed that he ever gets a mention on these boards. Never saw any familiarity between the two bands, or even heard mention of them in the same sentence, until I started posting on here and read different views from around the world (see also: Depeche Mode). I grew up thinking bands like the Cure were everything New Order weren't and their fanbase reflected similarly. Always thought New Order were a bit of a lads' band, and that the Cure were, if anything, a band for freaks and misfits (without wishing to sound harsh). All the Goth Girls used to love the Cure back in my teenage years, and not many blokes I knew (if at all?). I could go further and say that I don't really understand why anyone over the age of perhaps 18 could like the Cure cos they just seemed like a fashion statement for teenage angst, and teenagers, eventually, grow out of all that doom and gloom shite and move on.
I dont think I've ever met anyone into the The Cure who was wasnt a complete tool. Mind you, they generally couldnt make friends with anyone anyway.
I did once work with a DM fan (who followed them all over) who was a good lad.

i guess this is mainly a non- uk phenomenon, where all the british "post punk / new wave" bands get lumped into the same pot. i was told, " if you like new order, then you must like and should listen to suchandsuch a band."

I think, in this country at least, "if you like New Order," then you were genuinely expected to like most Factory bands.
Most of which, of course, are shite. But I still bought everything on Factory rather religiously.
well i got introduced to new order by a girl, but it was my best friend at senior high school who really got me into all those english bands. he thought it was his duty having been born in birmingham.
on a side note his brother thought it was a good idea to open the canberra brumbali restaurant.
