Can anyone point me in the direction of some decent free ware or should I shell out on Norton or whatever?

I'm not sure what's good and free. I rather view antivirus as a protection racket (my other computer doesn't need it why should the windows box), so I have no worries about stealing such.

I think there is a free version of AVG that me chum Leanne's been using for quite some time with no problems. I use kaspersky (actually it's a legit copy, tho I errr "extended" it's access to the virus defs database), and it's quite a well behaved little app.

I would avoid Norton, the last couple of versions of Norton I came accross were real ass pains...huge and slow and cumbersome.

go get spybot, and/or adaware. i would still recommend getting something like nortens, but that will cost.

spybot and adaware are not AV programs. Fookin useful tho. I'd certainly reccomend kaspersky over Norton based on several months of using it.

Panda

Very good and doesn't hog system resources. I have used both Norton and McAfee and I'd go for McAfee. Norton slows everything down.

AVG is good on the freeware route though and Panda is cheaper than the two heavyweights.

AVG = AntiVir Guard I presume.

I use this - it works fine and is free.

I had AVG on my Sony before the crash. But my new pc and subsequent rebuild of the Sony I had a corporate version (free) of Norton put on. Fast with more updates than AVG. But I never got a virus with AVG free edition.

For spyware I pay for Trend Micro's Anti-Spyware. Extremely fast with many updates.

AntiVir

I've been using that for a year now. Seems good, but I don't have it on half the time I'm online. I haven't had a virus since.. 2002? I think that has more to do with my downloading habits as opposed to me safety measures, however.

I'll put my vote for AVG too. It's never let me down.

I use AVG because I'm lazy but Kaspersky is much better.
