speaking of hardware. i just got to work and they tell me we are all getting new flat screens this week. i just had a look at the back of my current monitor and it was made in october 1996. mine beats the next oldest by almost two years. policy is to have new monitors every five years. they seem to replace the boxes every two years.

I've got a Sony Trinitron 17" CRT which I bought in 1998 and has done me pretty well for the last (christ) 8 years. I had a 5 year replacement policy which expired 3 years ago so money well spent there 
The only thing I don't like about it is it's heavy as f*ck to cart around the place being a CRT. I plan to get a flatscreen at some point this year and "retire" the Sony to my mum's house.
Great quality monitor though which is probably why it's lasted so long.
Acer 17" lcd: August last year...replacing a Packard fucking bell with severe thermal and ground harness issues....which lasted about a year after replacing a dell that me mate found in a skip, in water....it ran for ages :D
my nice dell 19" flat screen at home is only about 4 months old. my new flat screen at work will only be a 17" dell.
Sony Trinitron 19". Purchased in 1999. Sure it is big and heavy but I have seen few monitors that match its quality. We have flat screens at work, probably less than 3 years old, already shitting out.
Last year I was using a 17in generic flat screen CRT I picked up at a sale for 50$, then a month later found a 21 inch CRT (circa 1999) for 20$ at a garage sale. I like it for the visual real estate it offers.
For a while the monitor I was forced to use when my Trinitron blew in 2000 was a 13in Packard Bell monitor I had in 1995. What a difference that was, particularily during normal web browsing. Some resolutions should be abolished.
I have an Apple Studio Display 17” CRT I bought in 1997 or 98 and a Sony Trinitron 19" I bought a year later. They both still work well, but I want to get an Apple Cinema Display.
Dell 17" LCD flat panel, got it when my wife bought a Dell, she got my old 15".
Now I'm considering a 2nd one (since my card support it) and I've seen the possibilities at the current place I work... it's really interesting to be able to have 2 applications in front at the same time, or even TV on a 2nd monitor (I have a TV tuner card)
Dell 19" flat screen at home, which has been going strong since 2001 ! getting a new one at work because the old beast doesn't look good anymore, nowt wrong with it though. not my money :)
2000 iiyama vision master pro 451 19" crt. and it's fooked! won't do 1600x1200 @ 85Hz anymore :(
I had a look at the back of the monitor. Manufactured: September 2000. It's a Samsung SyncMaster 750s (17" CRT).
