that depends if you want to drive or fly. it is about 600km. one hour by plan, and about 8-9 by car if you do a coouple of stops on the way.

Yeah, but what wonderful stops they are though, Ron - The Ned Kelly Light and Sound spectacular at Glenrowan, the mighty Murray at Albury-Wodonga...the truck stops near Yass....
Maybe next time, Saviour - Cairns will pretty much do you nicely I'd say. Except for the Queenslanders, of course..

I just arrived back from Melbourne a few days ago and I have to say that it's an awesome city--Sydney is all flashy and "look at me!" (at least from a tourist point-of-view) but Melbourne felt very comfortable and it was so easy to just spend the hours in coffee bars or eating fabulous food. I loved all the close-in neighborhoods--Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond, St. Kilda--and getting around on the trams is a snap. And I would recommend seeing a footy match! We were able to catch the St. Kilda-Collingwood pre-season cup match at the Telstra Dome, and it was a real treat.

Ah yes, that was a heartbreaker. The St. Kilda fan I was with informed me that Collingwood has the ugliest-looking fans in the league...
My immediate concern now is where am I going to be able to get a pot/pint of V.B. or Cooper's Sparkling Ale? Even the Aussie pub down the street only has Foster's on draught :\ohwell:
Funny how Fosters has always been marketed overseas as this iconic Australian beer when no-one here drinks it. And if you love sport, music and food you won't get a much better place to live than Melbourne.
From a beer perspective, in Melbourne VB (Victoria Bitter) and Melbourne Bitter are the two big local beers with Crown Lager the slightly "smarter" choice. Apart from that it's mainly imported beers like Heineken, Stella etc. The kind of pubs that I frequent are the pool playing, rock 'n roll soundtrack, alternative kind, so I can't really speak for the smarter bars/clubs, where I'm pretty sure they'd laugh at you if you tried to order a beer.
I hail from Brisbane,. Saviour. Or Brisvegas, if you will. Tongue firmly in cheek there.
There is not really much for a tourist here but it is a good place to love. Things are close and accessible and pretty but we haven't any real destinations per se. We're a good stopover on the way to the beaches, but.
I aggree, Melbourne is the best place to visit. Never been to Sydney.

Depends what State you live in. Here in South Australia Coopers Pale Ale is huge, then probably West End Draught.
Don't mean to get too forthright here, but Fosters is shit, and Crown more so (being the same as Fosters only repackaged for knobheads who think that because it's more expensive, then it must be better. It's not).
Carlton Draught is IMHO probably the best domestic mass-produced beer here, Coopers is certainly OK, VB is adequate if nothing better is available....then a sizeable portion of daylight...then all the rest.
