Rangers face Uefa sectarian investigation.Uefa has launched an official investigation into claims Rangers fans sang sectarian chants during the club's Champions League tie against Villarreal. It is the first time European football's governing body has opened a prosecution case against a club on the grounds of sectarianism. If found guilty the Ibrox club could find themselves playing their European games behind closed doors.Television evidence will go before Uefa officials. Authorities have long said they want to stamp out prejudiced behaviour at matches, and now they will examine TV footage of Rangers Champions League tie against Villarreal to investigate if fans did sing bigoted songs.Making the prosecution case public they said: "The European governing body will give attention to the improper conduct and hooliganism of Rangers supporters in the return leg in Spain on March seventh, as well as to the fans' discriminatory chants in both fixtures."The investigations will centre on the behaviour of fans both in and outside the ground, including an attack on the Villarreal team bus. If found guilty, the club could face a hefty fine. But Uefa may decide to make an example of them, and could even close the ground to fans for European games next season.Supporters groups claim they are being unfairly singled out by Uefa, and have challenged the organisation not only to produce evidence of discriminatory chants, but also to show consistency in their treatment of all European clubs. They also claim they did not hear anything untoward at either game.
