i has something similar in my old car once. i think it was the igntion cable in the end. the smallest touch of the accelerater would see the car travel at 60 kmh. i was lucky not to crash into anything. it got fixed, and that car is still sitting in my garage.
It was in the paper yesterday... They had a list of dos and don'ts for if it ever happened to anyone else:
DO NOT - Try to use the handbrake. "The rear wheels are likely to lock and then it's goodnight Vienna"

I saw this guy on the news and I don't believe a word of it. Well, anyone can have an accelerator cable burn through, but why would the thing stay in gear? Autos don't do that - you can knock them into neutral at any time.
He's just a speed-freak who wanted to see how far he could go before he crashed, hoping that the gearstick story would stop them from bringing the hammer down on him when he finally stopped.
Either that or he was so stupid that it just didn't occur to him to knock it into neutral, pull over and wait for the AA like any other responsible citizen.
Three counties? Police couldn't keep up? My arse. He was in total control of that car. As for being frightened for his life, all he was frightened of was missing the ride of his life. He looks happy enough now he's getting his napper on the telly. Wait until those boys at BMW find nothing wrong with the car, then he won't be smiling.

it did seem a bit strange that he was afraid of losing power steering. a very weak excuse. nobody is that weak. a rear wheel drive 3 series should not be that hard to steer without it. trust me my old car is of similar size and rear wheel drive and does not have power steering.
You're absolutely right, Ron. When the car's not moving, you'd struggle to turn the wheel but at speed it's no problem.
The brakes would be more of an issue as you lose the servo-assist when the engine's not turning. Stand on them hard enough and the car will stop, but once you've burnt the disks out there's not much point. The fact remiains that if you turn off the engine, the car will stop accelerating. He cold then steer it into the hard shoulder and roll to a halt. If it really was suck in gear, you'd get a lot of eingine breaking too - that would slow him down in no time. The Police would surely have been telling him this over the phone.
Nah: Sky have jumped on this one a bit fast. My guess is he'll be arrested tomorrow.

i was in Sheffield once and stopped at a traffic lights facing uphill only to discover my handbrake cable had broke.I had to keep it at biting point waiting for the lights to change.A bit nervewracking

at least you have a handbrake option on your car.
i get a @#%@#% footbrake that you can only release with a manual release pull... which is useless when you're driving a manual on major inclines. no control with a footbrake. and I have no tachometer either!

I used to have an '89 560SEL. I think that had some sort of lever instrad of a handbrake.
