Hmmmm... I think in the U.S., UK punk has greater cachet. Billy Joe made his career mimicking U.K. punk. That said, The Ramones are one of my top 5 all time favorites, and the U.K. punk scene was a direct response to The Ramones.
Was gutted when Joey died. Gutted again when Strummer died.
U.S. or U.K. punk? Hard to say...
If I can talk my friends into it, I'm going to ask them to take my photo at Joey Ramone Place tomorrow. Hope they brought their camera...

OUT OF CONTROL!!!!! The venue was the On Broadway, the inside was done up in red velvet wallpaper, looked like a bordello. 
It was a great, great show! Too bad Jello and the rest of the band had that falling out.
Hey, I saw Jello do one of his spoken word performances last year; a friend had an extra ticket and gave it to me gratis. He ummm, doesn't care much for George Bush. But then you probably knew that. :)

Yeah, punk was hard to find here for a long time. When punk first hit, we didn't even really have a good idea of what it was. I mean, bands like AC/DC were being played alongside bands like The Adverts. I think bands like The Clash had to have influenced the politics of the U.S. bands, though.
One of the top 3 shows I've ever seen was a double bill: Social Distortion with The Ramones headlining.

I've heard he's the Michael Moore who does his research. Be good to see him and Henry Rollins on a tour.
Jello's working with the Melvins. They did a version of 'California Uber Allies' with the lyrics referencing Governer Ahrnold.
You're right. It is sad to see them fall out. This is interesting.
A crying shame that the remaining members have been reduced to this.

You can't be serious...
OK I only have three of their CDs... Stranger Than Fiction and The Gray Race, both top notch CDs, I also have Suffer, but I haven't listened to it in a while, so I can't tell you with absolute certainty that it's good, but my impression is that I've yet to come across a Bad Religion CD that wasn't good. Check 'em out.

I did listen. I never took The Ramones seriously: brief monotonous rock'n'roll melodies. Where's the anarchy, destroy-everything attitude? So what that they inspired the British punk-rockers? They are source material. They had long hair.
Dead Kennedys were quite fun. I remember their concert - people from the audience jumped up on the stage, ran thru and jumped back. It was hillariously chaotic :)

Here's another early San Francisco punk band that I'm sure at least one NOOLer can appreciate: The Avengers.

I'm not going to pick one over the other but there are good American punk bands that aren't the Offspring or Green Day. My favorite US punk band that is still alive and kicking would have to be Rancid. I also like Rancid side project the Transplants.
American punk had it's last death in 1985. No major bands just lots of small venue raiders. Still it was a great scene.

I never really cared for the second wave of the UK punk bands that much, especially the Oi! lot, but I did really go for the likes of Dead Kennedys, Husker Du, early Meat Puppets, Black Flag, Big Black, Naked Raygun, Crucifucks, Fear, Necros, Meatmen, etc.
The Kennedys were insane live, helluva good time, it's too bad that some neandrethals in Portland were the inspiration for their song Night Of The Living Rednecks, a true story of harrassment, with Jello being trapped inside a phone booth, which happened by the Kentucky Fried Chicken and Fred Meyer on Burnside (west side of the river) after a gig.
Right down the street from me, although there's no KFC there now. Rocket must've carted it off.

how about the stooges? or patti smith, television, blondie, richard hell and the voidoids and lots of other max's kansas city and CBGB bands from 1974 onwards.
Bad Brains S/T might be the best hardcore punk LP of all time. HR recorded vocals to some songs over the phone from JAIL. Hard. Also, Bad Brains' homophobic/Rastafarian beliefs have no bearing on their legacy.

A great compilation on vinyl if you can find it, "Let Them Eat Jellybeans". For you youngsters its a reference to Ronaldus Maximus. It feature DK's, Black Flag and others mentioned before.
A lot of punk rock was tied to the skate scene. Living in a rather tucked away corner of Florida, Skateboareder mag and Thrasher were ties to the West Coast music scene after New York started to age out.

UK punk has kind of died out, wheras US punk has kept going (though they do tend to sometimes sound like UK punk). The only thing about US punk that gets me is the political songs tend to be simple minded and boring lyrically. UK political punk is much more intruiging lyrically.
So my Answer: US punk except for politics UK punk for politics
In Offspring's defense, Smash is an excellent album, one of my fav punk albums of all time. Everything else they have done is so commercialized and IS crap.
Green Day just blows manly meat sausage.

i was really into the 80's CBGB's Scene, really the Hardcore scene and noboy like the ramones, it was all bout the bad brains, Cro-Mags & Agnostic Front, every sunday they had the Hardcore matinee's there were huge fights, stabbings, im not sure if there were any shooting's while i was around. i saw all those bands a million times killing time(raw deal), leeway, rest in pieces, AF, D.R.I.(from Texas), Gorrilla biscuits, Absolution. not too many of the people were into any other punk, like west coast stuff, although a lot were into Metal bands like Slayer & Motorhead, or they Listened to Oi!

shiny Dead Kennedys sticker on a first *b-o-o-m-box..*ooo. probably prefer the anti- everything- edge that the UK seemed to give their tunes. even as politics suck/ think ethics/ get angry/ do something about it was the common theme.

The DKs were a top band (though isn't their auto-karoke reincarnation a bit pathetic?), I played 'fresh fruit' to death. But have never cared for the Ramones, 'fraid to me they fall in to the 'all their songs sound the same' catagory. Plus they had too many conservatives in the band. Apart from the DKs I'd prefer UK punk any day.
What do you mean by 'post punk'? PIL? Gang of Four? Au Pairs? All good stuff.
Oh, and the thing about the Clash was that they were _such_ a bunch of posers, but they just posed so damn well you had to forgive them. And their politics were a bit naive, but at least it meant their songs were about something other than 'I luv you, I do'. Better naive politics than shite like "you're beautiful". Same goes for the Dead Kennedys. Never understood the big deal about Husker Du.

It's twice been released on cd over here by the BBC/Strange Fruit - once without Deutscher Girls and Puerto Rican and once with. It's still available at UK Amazon though it shouldn't be too hard to pick up off eBay.

It's the same thing! The Complete BBC Radio 1 Sessions (SFRSCD099) consists of the 3 Peel sessions plus a later session from the mid 90s. The Peel Sessions cd (SFRCD115) is missing two tracks from the first session and doesn't include the mid 90s session.

I don't know how I totally missed this thread, but I agree that it would be tough (at least for me) to choose between US punk and UK punk.

By the way did anyone else already know Boz Boorer was in Adam & The Ants??? I never knew this before, but just saw his name in the credits. Interesting how music is interlinked. Listen to bands for years and then later find out they have some of the same members. I never linked A& The A with Morrissey. Cool.

as far as bad religion goes, i always liked "against the grain." i have also been slowly getting into the damned, as of late...
but the real reason i was posting was to mention this time i was playing in a band. some record company flew us up to sf to play some industry party... i was 20, pumped full of soma and beer, and don't remember much aside from have to lift my guitar player of the bathroom floor of a denny's somewhere near north beach(?) and seeing beer-bellied jello jump on stage with some mexican punk/psyco-billy band that alternative tentacles had just signed... i remember thinking that jello needed to go for a run and that his freddy crugar pullover and glasses made him look like someone from the "tri-lamdas."
