Vitamins - worthwhile?

I've been taking cod liver oil in a morning as i don't like fish. I also take Vitamin C. I am constantly reading conflicting advice, one 'expert' says they're good for you, another says not. Obviously eating the real thing is better but when you have a busy lifestyle or don't like certain foods - what do you do?

I figure they can't hurt unless you're going above and beyond the daily recommended dosage. Like if the pill has 800% of your iron intake a day(I know some that do) it's probably a good idea to stay away.

I take plenty: vitamin C, Selenium, Zink etc (none of them the real thing though) on a daily basis.

They're not good because of that E330 element they all have in them which might cause cancer.

But then again all I ever eat is junk.

So how big of a hypocrite does it make me then? :uhoh:

Happen that's why i've been twitching so much!

I'll keep taking them for now, it does bother me though because i know that my diet doesn't include some of the essential vitamins and minerals. But I'm far too busy to prepare and cook veg every night. Where do you stop? I only take 2 tablets but i could end up taking a handful for the things i'm missing out on!

Buy a steamer, it makes veg cooking so much easier. 20 mins for broccoli, 10 for mushrooms and peppers, 6 for asparagus. Chuck a handful of rocket and watercress salad on your plate, along with some cherry tomatoes and raw yellow pepper, and you will have the recommended 5 portions of fruit and veg a day at little expense and little effort.

I do take a zinc tablet once a day as well, but that's about it. And three litres of water a day. Works wonders, 16lbs off in 8 weeks so far.

I do actually have a steamer and it's brilliant, but i only seem to like broccoli and carrots. Also now i live on my own it's sometimes too much hassle going to the trouble of preparing veg. It's too easy to just bung a ready meal in the microwave. I have however, been making fruit smoothies so i'm getting better. Gillian McKeith has a lot to answer for!

2 tablets per day sounds pretty reasonable to me

You might as well try one of those "all in one" in case to get all the vitamins you need.

And if you're a heavy smoker like me make sure to take at least one Vitamin C per day but never more than 2 :)

I think a lot of it is psychological - take vitamins, feel better... Anyway, what's the problem - beer contains all the necessary good stuff doesn't it? :beer2:

I do drink a lot of red wine, which the experts seem to agree is very good for you in lots of ways.

Only one glass per day is good for your health I'm afraid :(

Gillian would curse you if she knew you were on the ready meals! Chock full of added salt and sugar - and costly, small and not all that nice.

It only takes ten minutes to prepare a full lot of veg - try this out:

  • break up broccoli into florets and bung them in steamer for 20 mins
  • while these are doing, chop up a pepper or two and some mushrooms, and add them after ten mins (or add half of them and stick the others back in the fridge, then use them tomorrow and save yourself the time)

Fish oil is _definitely_ worth taking, loads of studies show all sorts of positive effects, from the omega 3. It can certainly lower cholesterol levels. I assume cod liver oil is by definition a kind of fish oil. Personally I don't think _vitamin supplements_ (B, C, etc) as such are worth bothering with, better to eat fruit and veg. I think there's some evidence that garlic is good for you.

Arsehole. Prepare means peel, seed and cut. Cook means cook. The idea is that broccoli doesn't take much preparation, so you can bung that in the steamer while preparing (seeding and trimming) the other vegetables.

I just take a multivitamin. Yes, it is worthwhile but vitamins from fresh food sources are better.

I did a similar diet 18 months ago, lost 2 stone in 3 months! Trouble is I've piled most of it back on already  Gonna have to hit the veg again BIGtime ;) Wait until you eat a ready meal or some other junk out of a tin or packet! I tell you the msg in it will leave you gagging :)

Is this a healthy diet? I've been meaning to ask the doc or whoever if i should add or remove anything form what i eat.

Breakfast - i always have cereal (cornflakes) . 2 slices of toast (wholemeal bread) and a ccouple of coffees

Lunch at work - 4 sandwiches consisting of anything from ham , spreads (salmon paste , pate etc.)or cheese.sometimes fishy type fillings .An orange or banana , one packet of crisps and coffee

Dinner when i get home at night - potatoes(4) and green veg(broccoli or peas) almost EVERY night .which compliments a lamb OR pork chop OR a steak & kidney pie OR lasagne OR sausages OR .Pizza maybe once a week.Fish on a Friday

I never get round to trying much else as it would involve trapsing round Tescos too much

wondering if i should start taking some vitamins or not

cheers

At the risk of sounding like Gillian McKeith, try:

ditching the coffees and replacing them with nettle or green tea, with no milk, sugar or sweeteners

eat the fruit mid-morning

cut the 4 sandwiches to 2, halve the amount of cheese, dump the crisps and replace with carrot or celery sticks

no to pies, sausages (made of guts and shite) and pizza. Increase the amount of fish (salmon, mackerel or other oily fish) to at least twice a week, maybe three. maybe consider potatoes at lunchtime rather than the evening, you will have more energy in the afternoon.

get at least 2 litres of water down you every day.

NO beer, fizzy drinks or caffeine.

edit--think that, if not way over-board, - all black teas and coffees are excellent. all teas really. Gillian McKeith. You Are What You Eat. mum had an older(70 s) You are What You Eat-- or something similar next to her Joy of Sex on the bookshelf. quite funny.
nettle--is a wonderous thing. kidneys, lymphs etc. internal and external.

not so much about vitamins but extra C-and some halibut liver oil can go a long way. dark fruits. dk. green veggies etc.yumm. more studies come out saying that popping vitamins is all horsefeathers $ and scare tactics but they do tend to go along with a better lifestyle and clearer attitude.![](http://<a href=)http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/2009/1950qa0lz.jpg" class="max-w-full" alt="" loading="lazy" /> just wanted to put this picture back out.
