Mario. The stoner who thought of that is a genius.

Oh, a dilemma. Mario (NES) or Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX).

California Games was an addictive lil game back in the day on the Commodore 64.

BUT.

Super Smash Bros on the N64 stole the lives of many of my friends and I during college. And after college. And kept us awake when we had to be in to work at 3am to fix broken computers. To this day, someone offers up a game and you had better set aside a few hours to get the tourney sorted out.

Grand Theft Auto, from the first one to San Andreas

Well in terms of modern gaming...

For golden oldies I'd go for Elite or Sabre Wolf on the BBC Micro!

Mario, definitely

Back in the day I used to consider myself a bit of a gun with games, but Defender was the one game that I found almost unplayable - all those goddamn buttons (7 if I remember correctly) and really tough gameplay.

Defender (arcade) had two buttons and a joystik. Maybe four.

from the arcade in the early '80s: TRON galaga frogger centipede galaxian q-bert

from my nintendo 64: tetris (damn annoying, though) super mario brothers

(relatively) modern: legend of zelda series lufia raygun 2 final fantasy goldeneye tekken 3

out of all of these i'd have to go with the zelda series.

Resident Evil 4 on the gamecube. The ps2 version is utter, utter shite, they've turned what looks like a labour of love, on the cube, to a low res jittery pile of wankfest garbage! It's only saving grace is the extra levels and 1 extra weapon

The old sonic games, so mint. Back on the Sega Megadrive. James Pond (the fish) was also quality. Classics.

i had a commodore 24. it had no hard drive and everything was saved on cassette; our TV was the monitor. i remember flipping back and forth between playing space invaders and watching the 1984 olympics in LA.

commodore 64 ws too advanced for the wood family.

Always had to go my friend's house to play the C64 at the time. Always hated that typically when the game was done loading, I had to start heading home.

Ah, the '84 Olympics in LA. My first Olympics experience. My mom had us record the entire series on VHS for memorabilia. That was a wonderous technology, the VHS.

we also had pong from radio shack. you could play tennis (green screen), handball (orange?) screen, and something else i can't remember (blue screen). the joystick was this long handle with a thing you'd slide up and down, thus sliding the 'I' up and down the screen.

pong was a game of strategy and wit. they should bring it back--i think today's kids would just love it.

Did anyone have an intelevision Console? There was a great primitive football manager on it..Out the same time as Atari(on which defender was shit-hot)Intelevision kind of lost the war to Atari, like Betamax did to vhs..There was only one other lad to trade games with at the time, but games like Tron were far better than Atari offerings, save the sublime Defender

i don't remember intelvision, but i remember colecovision. i was convinced it was going to drive atari out of the market. this is why i do not work in the business world.

Legend of Zelda for SNES... i was so obsessed with that silly game

Mario 64 the first game for Nintendo64 was so trippy

Half-Life was hella cool

Starcraft is near perfection for that type of game

Quake 2 was just fun trying to make my video card work, a game in itself

many old sports games, so unrealistic, but often captured the fun of the sport much better than "improved" games

I couldn't get past Level 30 on Doom 2.That level where you have to go to the top to pull a lever, then jump down into this green shit. Then elevate to where there should be an exit, stand in molten lava, and get shot by all an sundry.Absolutely no way out.

Uncle Liam wrote: Command and Conquer. Probably the original Red Alert. Even though they are all fantastic.

One of my best friends and I would plan entire days around Red Alert. I had purchased the cable that connected the PlayStations together which allowed us to play against each other. The catch was each player needed their own television set. So I would haul the 17" set out the guest room and take it to his house and we's set up on either end of his dining room table.

During one game we built our bases for so long that when we went to battle the game slowed down so much we couldn't play. So, we set time limits for building after that.

Tesla Coils, baby!!!

WHAT? NO SPY HUNTER?? That game is AWESOME!!!!!

asteroids, rampart, galaga, and paperboy were pretty fun too... r.c. pro-am, top gun, jaws... damn. i need another NES.

i used to love "Stryder" on the original NES... you traveled the globe, picking up floppies and you had to kill your best friend because he became a "bad guy" at sometime before the storyline in the game. does anyone remember this??
