very true. I would like to see the american economy function without them.

nothing like a government to think things through.. other countries are perfect for holiday visits..

yet people from those (visited)countries aren't respected enough to earn a legal wage elsewhere if they want a change. perfect chance for a(nother) union to form that would support these workers.

Only in the last couple of days a case in the UK has led to the jailing of an Chinese immigrant smuggler re: Cockle pickers.

19 cockle pickers drowned in Morecambe Bay in NW England, due to fast tides a couple of years ago. They were being paid less than £5 a day, and given a room in which 30 people lived.

i also believe if citizenship was as available as my ancestors were privy to, they would be more than willing to become a citizen.

we seem to forget that we were all immigrants once. even the native americans came from asia.

In UK its slightly different, but we have learned to accept that economic migrants do our shitty jobs - currently we are receiving about 200,000 Poles a year, and they are integrating into society very quickly without complaint. They basically 'get on with it'.

And they still do it but with European cocklers now,all regulated apparently...Some of those Chinese lads that died paid 6 grand each to be smuggled into the country and die like that,they never stood a chance against a tide that comes in faster than a galloping horse...

wow, that is a lot of poles. Being of polish descent, i find that poles may integrate very well. Aww..this may be ignorant of me, but they had a lot easily time than the irish in the states.

Beats me, but I have two Poles working for me. Their language isn't great, but they are hard working, reliable and trustworthy. I wish I could say the same of the English, sometimes.

Sorry Twist. In my opinion, they not travel for a job but for better daily life conditions. Once they arrive somewhere, they look for a job to settle down or send money to their homecountries, where the "rest of the family" stayed. Most immigrants of the first generation try to be "nowhere to be seen" in order to avoid problems. The second generation is another problem indeed.

Basically, from a UK Employer's view, they are most welcome. If my Government decided they were 'illegal' (although its different here cos they part of the newly expanded European Community), I would be pissed off, like you guys.

It seems this legislation is more a result of terrorism and poor border controls, i.e. singling out the few due to media fuelled hysteria, rather than seeing the benefits.

It's almost state sponsored racism. I hope it never happens here.

Polish and Rumanian business men sent some people in France and then forgot them once they had the money from the French ones. French trade unionists said that it was unfair and asked the Poles and Rumanians to be on strike to be paid, at least by the French business men... otherwise they would have carried on working hard for... nothing.

clause- pay very poorly. true when uneducated, really, the only jobs that may be available are of the low-wage/ service industry.

The problem is slightly different. Mexicans in the US as Poles and Eastern people in the UK or Western European countries because of international business agreements, free-trade zones (zones de libres échanges). So, I may think that they are accepted more easily than people from other places in the world. Where the difference lies, in my opinion, is that people of Eastern Europe do more look like us. France has already known a huge wave of polish immigrants (I mean the ones that were not rich enough to pay the fare to the US). Then, second wave when the Communists took hold of their countries. I maybe wrong, being far from America, but it seems that Mexican immigration is younger than the European one, especially after the first world war.

Considering how the hispanic vote has been traditionally Republican, I'd say the GOP is shooting itself in the foot. To lose a huge voting block like that is just plain stupid. And I mean the legal and native-born Latinos, the ones who can vote and will. And probably think twice before checking all Republican the next time they go to the polls

yes.

that doesn't necessarily mean they'd vote republican, though. the US has a very narrow political spectrum, unlike many countries; the difference between republicans and democrats is actually quite minimal when considered from an international perspective.

I based my "hispanics voting Republican" comment on the fact that a lot of Hispanics are conservative due to their Catholic faith, and thus fall more in line with the conservative Republicans (at least that's what my Sociology professors have stated over the years). I'm willing to bet that if you look at the voting records nationwide for registered Latino voters, there will be a heavy bias towards the GOP.

I reserve the right to be wrong, of course (it's kind of like saying "all blacks vote Democrat". There's a grain of truth to it, but it's a stereotype nonetheless)

personally i think it has to do with the large expatriate cuban population. they don't like anything that even smacks of socialism.

but remember--the religious right (and, by extension, socially conservative republicans) have no love for catholics.

i did a little research. in 2000, the hispanic vote broke down as such:

49% democrat 14% republican 37% independent (traditionally voted democrat in the past)

in 2004, however, bush garnered more hispanic votes than any other republican persident before him, with 44% of the hispanic vote to john kerry's 53%.

it depends where you live.

in the southwest: mostly mexico.

in the southeast: cuba, central america (mainly guatemala, honduras and el salvador), the dominican republic, and south america (LOTS of brazilians in orlando).

in the northeast: puerto rico.
