This all comes from an interview with Russell Davies on the radio this morning, who was asked if he'd consider a female Doctor, and replied that he'd relish the challenge.
No suggestion that it would actually happen, but then the Star is not exactly the most newsworthy of papers.

Actually I was listening to the "Dr Who Unbound" plays recently, and one of those features arrabella weir as a Dr who decides from to hide from the TimeLords by working in sainsbury's and getting well lashed every night (living under the name....wellll....Susan Foreman of course). Most amusing.
Time Lords and Time Ladies are not generally interchangeable tho (Romana and the Rani for instance never grew cocks). But then, to quote Silvester.......
