Sonic Youth

Anyone recommend a good album of theirs?

i got murry street and liked it so bought nyc ghosts and wasn't too keen, so i've come to the conclussion they're quite hit and miss, so trying to find the hits and avoid the misses.

I've not heard anything by them

All i know is that they are opening up for Pearl Jam on some of their US shows this year

Bad Moon Rising Sister EVOL Daydream Nation

Subsequent lps did not appeal to me and I stopped purchasing them after the one with Kool Thing (that one got a few spins) but those 4 listed above are rockin' bastards!

I found out recently that Sonic Youth did a song named "Chapel Hill" (my college town!). I haven't listened to the song or the group, though.

The music press was forever singing their praises back in the late eighties but i never got into them in a big way.

Sister is my personal favourite.

The only album I know all of so far is Daydream Nation, which I really like! My favourites are "Teen Age Riot" and "Candle." Based on the other songs I've heard, I'd have to agree that SY are sort of hit-and-miss.

But yeah, I'd recommend Daydream Nation.

Sister has some real kick as songs. Bad Moon Rising is the aureal landscape for Halloween EVOL like Sister has some kick ass do not miss tunes Day Dream Nation floats from the beautiful to the fast ass kicking guitar raping peak of their career.

yeah. agree with Arek P there. spot on. Goo below is the best. Daydream Nation is great too, especially Silver Rocket and Teenage Riot

i have tried a few times to get into them. i saw them live opening for the stooges a few years ago, but they are just too Noisy for me.

know what you mean Frank. GOO isn't too noisy though. some good choons.

Never got into Goo. I liked Mildred Pierce until the abrupt end. Kool Thing was alright but the lp was otherwise disappointing.

they sounds specifis, thats true. Those fookin rough guitars can blow your head up, hehehe:). They are not only noisy, they are annoying mostly.

Saw em on the Sister tour at Gabe's Oasis, Iowa City. IA. Was able to secure a spot next to the stage infront of Lee during the openning act, The Hollowmen. Some girl I did not know locked her arm around mine and another arm around a bouncer and then several hundred people pushed against the stage. It was awesome. All the guitars were in total fuckin' blur they played so fast.

Yes their music gets tiring which probably explains why I stopped listening to them after DAyDream Nation. But every Halloween I play Bad Moon Rising as the trick o treaters dare to come up to my house.

Thurston Moore was standing next to me at the Animal Collective show last month. i didn't know it was him until my friend pointed it out later.

any album between 1983-1992 is good. the Dirty Deluxe edition is rockin' especially.

i also highly back the Lee Ranaldo/Birchville Cat Motel album '30th December 2004' recorded live at Tonic in NYC. Totally droning, ecstatic sonic peregrinations by 2 guitar legends.

Does Barney's guitar wankery on Truth pre-date Sonic Youth?
