USB port won't recognize hardware ,help please?

Having trouble reinstalling my scanner/printer.USB port won't detect the hardware.Anybody can help me out with an answer? Thanks in advance

I would suggest ignoring any instrucitons regarding when to plug the thing in. instead, just casually plug it in while sitting at the desktop and see what happens, if it pops up one of those happy little boxes to say it's found summat, or it makes a cheerful beep, then seen about whether windows can work out what it is ( because your drivers should be in from your failed attempts). If sod all happens you have a deeper problem, try the port with other devices.

Click on Control Panel and click on "Printers and Other Hardware" (in category view). Then click on "Add a Printer". If your printer came with a CD, especially the drivers disk, install those on the computer first.

The port works fine with other devices:(

How many USB ports does your computer have, Johnny? Go to "View installed printers". Right click on the printer in question, and click on "Properties". More suggestions coming soon.

You need the drivers in then, if their own setup program isn't doing the triack, use the old "fuck off I'll find it myself" option in the hardware wizard, tell it you have a disk and browse the driver CD (or floppy) until you find a promising looking .inf file. (if you are lucky the disc will be JUSt for your device and there will be only drivers for it and thus only a couple of inf files (probably win9x.inf and winxp.inf or simmilar), if you are unlucky you'll get drivers for everything thay have made for 15 years and you need to stick yer deerstalker on.

Why do things alwyas go wrong on bank holidays?

Follow the additional advice on my previous post (right-click on the printer that you want, left click on "Properties"). After that, go to the tab that says "Ports". Make sure the USB box is checked.

the USB port that is checked is "NUL" Local port. which box should be checked?

The word beside the box should be USB, unless if you named the USB port NUL. Also if you have four ports, check the USB ports one at a time to check which one your printer is connected to.

When's the last time you used it? Many people had printer & scanner issues after XP Service Pack 2 was installed.

Go to the website of your scanner manufacturer and have a look for driver updates. See if there is a user forum as the answers may be on there.

Thanks all for the suggestions but i just can't get the Wizard to find the software installation disc.Fuck it . i'll just have to live without scanner and printer.

The shed game is not affected though.

see if there is a setup.exe on the CD. or search it for files ending .inf and then use the "have disk" option in the hardware wizard.

What's the software you're trying to install that Wizard can't find? Alternatively, you could test the USB port with a USB key fob to see if you can get the files on your key fob.

Perhaps you just need to get an updated driver for the software (it could even be online...weirder things have happened).

Of course I never read the manual. I just play until it works...or I go the linux route! Ah, my dearest precious Linux...

Better yet, take a photo of your setup and the error that you get on Wizard, and perhaps Campo can try helping you via click-and-error..

I'm tryinmg to run the installation disc for my scanner and printer.I just uninstalled it today to try and fis a problem.Now the wixard can't detect the software to reinstall it

Gimme a minute I have a plan.

Plan sucked cos I can't trigger the "new hardware found" dialogue.

The first page on the wizard, the bottom option should be "let me find it" or something like that, hit it, next page it should offer some tick boxes, again you want the bottom one which will take you to another page where you click "have disk", then "browse". And find the driver by hand on the CD.

But I'd defo try a an updated driver first if you can find one.

Click browse and do some detective work on your driver cd.

it will only list applicable files.

There will probably just be a folder called drivers or something.

If windows is SO EASY, why have I succesfully migrated a linux system that filled an 80 GB and a 40GB drive to a fresh 160GB drive, including manually resetting all the system stuff to point to the new drive, and not to mentioned getting inside the machine to install the new drive then remove one of the old ones.....in less time than it has taken a seemingly intelligent human beaing to install a device that is supposedly plug and pray, I mean play?

I sudenly remembered i could simply do a system restore to the day before i fucked things up!! Why didn't i just think of that yesterday instead of ruining a whole bank holiday afternnoon pissing about?! DOH!!!!

Backups are your friend, tho I'd consider something like Norton Ghost or Acronis trueimage, rather than putting me faith ins system restore....in the past when push came to shove and the machine was in tatters it really let me down.

I forgot about System Restore. I don't use it so much though. Glad you have your printer fixed, Johnny .
