Talking Heads

Bought Stop Making Sense album today, and I really like it. Seen some footage from the DVD (David Byrne in big suit etc) and I might get that.

Any recommendations on what to get next?

I've got one of the albums but i can't remember what it's called - it's got "And She Was" on it.

just get that DVD, it's amazing.

Well, I dunno about re-watch value but it's a fabulous movie, a must see of music without a doubt.

If you're not bored of live albuns, try "The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads", recently released on CD by Rhino. Top quality.

If you want a studio album, maybe "Talking Heads: 77", their first album, very raw and energetic sound.

Just out of interest ,how many albums do you buy a week ,Christopher? You seem to be endlessly buying new ones.

Personally I'd go for either Remain in light or Speaking in tongues. I prefer the more polished production on both albums as against the rawness of their earlier stuff.

talking heads must be about due for a big revival.

"stop making sense' is essential. In fact, i never got into their proper recordings .They never caught their live energy. One of the best rock n roll movies ever.

Yeah, I've got a recommendation. Put a comfortbale chair out on the patio/deck on a warm late afternoon this spring, make a nice drink or fire up any other enhancer that can remain within arm's reach, don shades, face the sun, and put your newly-purchased version of "Naked" on shuffle - trying not to play "The Democratic Circus" more than 20 times.

Yeah. For instance More Songs about Building and Food is good example of this. Although it has about 3 great songs the rest of the lp is utterly forgetable. Take Me To the River and the one that goes "I would'nt live there if they paid me."

Remain In Light and Fear Of Music are my two faves, I love the 5.1 mixes on the new reissues of the albums.

I've said it before here, and I'll do so again: the Stop Making Sense stuff is great, but was no match for the live show itself. The band was obviously having a lot of fun onstage, and the entire audience was going nuts. Twas nice to thank Jerry Harrison personally for some great music after the New Order show in Oakland last year.

one of the first bands i really got into, and this was my first talking heads album. i bought it when i was about 10. i listened to the cassette so much it barely plays now.

for a good retrospective: sand in the vaseline double CD.

Never liked TH, really, except for Psycho Killer and Burniung Down the House. I guess Once in a Lifetime is good for a goof.

Great album is "Sand inthe Vaseline" 2-disc set. . .or the have a new 1 disc best of that came out two years ago.

I really like Remain in Light, but the rest of the stuff doesn't do it for me...

I love TH! Talking Heads '77 and Speaking in Tongues would be good albums to get next. TH '77 is different from their later work, but enjoyable. SiT has great songs like "Swamp" and the exquisite "Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place)" (and of course "Burning Down the House).

Oddly, I never really got into Remain in Light, other than a few songs.

I would go for Speaking In Tongues the delve in to the deeper stuff - Remain In Light, Talking Heads '77. Personally, I couldn't get into RIL but many other people call it genius.

How many albums DO you buy a week? I hope your number is much higher than mine. I've been a little out of control with that lately.

Have to disagree. Seen David Byrne 8 times since the Rei Momo tour in 1989. I love what he does with the Talking Heads stuff. He does a different interpretation of the songs on every tour. You mabye just caught him on a bad one. First time I saw him he only did two (rather obscure) Heads songs in the whole set, Papa Legba and Mr Jones. There's been more and more creeping in with every tour though.

And lest we forget that a lot of his solo material is right up there with TH stuff. "Feelings" is a better album than anything Talking Heads did since "Remain In Light" and "Look Into The Eyeball" is also a belter.

And did you know that David Byrne is a Jock? Born in Dumbarton.

Speaking in tongues is fantastic followed by remain in light. Naked quite good- notably Johnny Marr's guitar work. Fantastic band -I wish I had seen them live

Tis a band i've never really listened to. I was at a Sophie Ellis-Bextor concert a couple of years ago and she did a cracking cover of Once in a Lifetime.

Speaking In Tongues is a classic,and i`ll put myself on record as saying Stop Making Sense is the best concert movie/album ever...

The reissues are fantastic. But why didn`t they give the Stop Making Sense album the 2 disc CD/DVD treatment?

Had a college roommate who once suggested that if you liked TH you therefore must like The Planet of The Apes.

reviewers are raving about a just released reissue of My Life in the Bush With Ghosts, an suppossed Eno and Byrne collaberation, as a breakthru that inspired all similar music made in the next decade... i didnt really hear the album back in the early 80s, but didn't Cabaret Voltaire do similar stuff at the same time? My Life Busg Ghosts has dated alot IMO.

personally i find David Byrne to be an vastly overrated songwriter/ performer. the best song off of the second record is a Al Green classic. the experimentialism of the Talking Heads (with Eno also) from the first 4-5 records are often very intersting but True Stories is well made pretentious crap... the band become second banana to Byrne's ego in the 80s

Another recommendation for you to get Speaking in Tongues next. Class album.
