Orbital

Just been blasting Orbital for the last couple of nights, and am rediscovering for the nth time how fantastic they are/were, especially in the dormant NO period between 1992 and 1997.

I was thinking about doing a Top 3:

1. Chime
2. You Lot
3. Out There Somewhere (Part 2)

But what I'm missing is a decent live gig from approximately c.1998, when they were merging Doctor Who into Chime as an encore, and doing the Bon Jovis in Halcyon etc.

BUT, the first I ever heard of Dr? was live in Leeds with my insane mate Esther....and my memory has it coming in differently than usual.....it kept rolling on the first note for ages, and when it made the first chord change it was like there were two audience....the 40% or so who INSTANTLY knew what they were hearing, and the 60% who were wondering why their previously calm friends were now twitching and foaming at the mouth while hovering a good foot in the air :D

Made the entire trip worthwhile on it's own, everything else was just freebies :D

Prolly on the same tour here, Cambo. It was an incredibly slow build up, note by bassy note perhaps for a couple of minutes, and yup it didn't take long for me either to recognise it. Album version is rubbish by comparison. I had it on CD once, I think live from Worcester ca 1998, but lent it out. Would kill to find it again, almost.

Someone must KNOW where to find it online..

I have several live versions but not that one. Lots of slow intros, but as I recall it at that gig ( and I was sober) it built into the rhythm......but never moved of the D or whatever for AGES... just on and on on one note, then the bass moved and gave it away...possibly at the same time the searingy good lead came in.

march 99 it was.

Do a search for "orbital music trading" on yahoogroups, they do torrents and weeding, I occassionally grab the odd torrent, but I think I've got all the best gigs :D

I was on the M25 Orbital yesterday, It was pants :(

i quite like the cozzie mix.

I used to get yelled at at parties for liking your No3 better than anything else on snivelisation (whch I am less than fond of the production on..ie there IS some :D ).

But yes Burt, Al is telling true, that gig was magical, and when I heard Hartnell quoting (or rather Hartnols's quoting Hartnell quoting) that which is in my sig, I bawled like a wee'un.

C'mon Stevo; surely "?" is your fave!

Saw em quite a few times in the 90s ,Tribal Gathering 95 ,Glastonbury etc. (94 was the classic )

Have been listening to the Insides and Middle Of Nowhere albums lately in fact.Middle.. is superb.

i have a casette somewhere with the Ally Pally New Year's Eve 96 gig on (i think it was 96 , could have been 97)

I got a tape off the mixing desk from a festival in Croydon c.1996 which was just a bizarre gig, cos they started asking for requests. I managed to get a a small section of the crowd to chant 'All the Naked and the Dead' until they played it.

Some old coffin dodger i knew once described Belfast as sounding 'like a car alarm going off at choir practice'.

Trouble with Orbital is that i could name 20 great tunes and still think of more. E.g. - Choice, The Tranquillizer, Planet of the Shapes, Speedfreak, Frenetic, Way Out, Walk Now.... list is endless.
