Tomorrow's A Day With Out An Immigrant

Are you ready? I mean us, US folks

I'm ready to call one of the employers and beg for their absent worker's job.... again. Really, I'm all for my legal immigrant neighbors, who are going out to counter protest millions of people trying to get mass-legalized when it took the people next door to us 6 years to get here through the proper channels.

Should prove interesting.

If anything al they will accomplish is to piss off American voters. Most businesses should be prepared. I know we are and are looking forward to the savings in labor costs.

Tonight I talked to my friend that owns a small factory in Chicago area and we recalled a conversation we had many years ago. We both agreed that legal immigrants were about the best people to hire. Americans tend to be very unreliable. He will be missing 2 employees, I will be missing about 4. Hate to see the quality of worker missing but there are plenty of applications to take their spot if we lose them.

I'm really sick of this BS wedge issue completely fabricated by Karl Rove and the republicans for their "get out the base" vote for 2006. This is exactly the same thing as the gay marriage fabricated wedge issue that was used in the 2004 campaign.

Why wasn't this a "crisis" 6 months ago? Why wasn't there proposed legislation a year ago...because it didn't have any benefit for Frist and the republican majority.

All those that are marching today are being USED and manipulated so that fox news and the local papers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee etc can run stories about the mexican illegals "demanding more stuff" while "waving the mexican flag" and "singing the national anthem in spanish".

There will be no legislation about immigration because the republicans would never risk alienating the mexican american community...they are just using this to scare their white religious base into getting out and voting in november.

Also...this is a great way to keep the WAR in Iraq off the front page along with the stories about high gas prices.

By the word "immigrant", do they mean people who are in the US illegally, or do they mean people who's ancestors were immigrants (or even people who became naturalised American citizens)?

Such is Politics. Happens on BOTH sides, Republican and Democrat.

A minor correction, but the war in Iraq is over, it is now by definition an occupation.

I don't think the people that are protesting really understand what they are protesting for or against. I think they are all bandwagoning over national pride, not over a real issue. Unless I'm missing the full point as well.

To the previous writer...fair point on it being an occupation in Iraq...and that politics gets played on both sides...just pointing out that I believe that it is a smokescreen/wedge issue and not really worthy of serious debate. Lou Dobbs is rabid on this issue and has attempted to make it a serious debate...that is certainly valid...but the whole legislation to make it a "felony" to help an illegal alien is just chum for the rabid right.

I guess I don't know enough onthe issue. When you say a felony for helping an illegal, what does that entail? Helping them cross the border, harbouring them, employing them, or all the above?

What will the Republicans benefit exactly by this "manipulation"? Do the Democrats stand behind those illegal immigrants?

Here's my problem with the situation: every day when I work, I come into contact with Mexican and other Latino immigrants who come into the store and try to get food for their families. They're usually on food stamps, but they also have cash from the jobs that they work (and that a hell of a lot of "natives" I know wouldn't sniff at). To paint them all as "welching off the government without contributing something back" is borderline racist, at best.

Sure, there are some who live off the dole, but you can say that of every racial group. If you come to this country illegally but do your best to provide for your family and get naturalized, you shouldn't be penalized. And stop with the goddam "learn the language" crap, okay. English is easily the hardest language to learn, especially if you're past the early stages of childhood when the capacity to learn and distinguish between languages. Don't give me this bullshit that "they should learn our language", sure it would be nice if they were able to speak English but maybe we (us "natives" should try, just try, to learn a little Spanish. It wouldn't kill you to learn the preterite form of "tener", would it?

If you want to build a wall on the Rio Grande, hey, go ahead. Just be prepared to work all day out in the orange and vegetable groves under the hot sun, that's all. Oh, and get paid barely enough to get by

Eh but the problem is indeed that those "dirty" jobs are paid poorly because the employers know they can save on labor costs since there's a blossoming market of cheap labor provided by the illegal immigrants.

Shut this market down and the employers will be reduced to pay higher to get ANYONE to work for them, including white Americans. Or: no oranges for you.

Well they shouldn't have cultivated the lands in the US in the first place then! A simple calculation: it'd be cheaper to get fruits Costa Rica. What's the point in all those Californian garden haciendas.

Also, why are you so sure they'll be cheaper from Mexico etc. These countries may boycot their exports into US. Or the US government may raise custom duties for Mexican imports to make it up for the domestic exploiters.

Anyway, I didn't talk particularly about field and garden jobs. I meant the principle of economics.
