The fall of the US economy...

so what exactly is fuelling the decline in the us dollar? is it the huge budget deficit, or is it the balance of payments?

in oz we no longer have a budget deficit, at least at the federal level. we still have a gap in the balance of payments though. our interest rates aren't that high an haven't risen for almost two years.

perhaps our dollar is rising in comparison to the us dollar due to the resources boom. we have lots of stuff that can be mined. we have also recently concluded a huge uranium export deal with china.

then again the usa is resource rich as well. i really don't know the reason why the us dollar should be falling. economic conditions are much the same as they were a couple of months ago.

it lowers the cost of American exports compared to the Euro ones or to the ones of other major contries which have other currencies... and the American trading is more competitive even within the North American free-trading zone (Canada+Mexico)... Well I am not an expert, but where is the logic otherwise ?

Economists for a long time (pre-1999) have been saying the US economy is in decline. As for its recent sharpness of decline, the recent foreign expenditure i.e. war policy must be draining it a lot. The decline of the dollar is not the fall of the US economy. Growth is at 8% way higher than any European country. Add this to interest rates being at an all time low of around 3% the economy is actually growing. Seems the idea of measuring a countries worth on the value of its currency is no longer appropriate.

To clarify, I don't think the exchange rate between the Candian & US dollar marks the decline of the US economy. Our trade deficit, particularly with China is one of the reasons. Then our goods are cheaper to export...I do think our country as a whole is in decline and this administration's policies are speeding up the process.

a lower currency does not necessarily mean a weaker economy. just ask the exporters. it will make their products much more internationally competitive. more sales equals more production equals more jobs equals more economic growth. in theory anyway. economics is a complex subject.

Its pretty obvious why Canada's currency is on the rise. Its called lots and lots of OIL!
