VH1 Classic doing a vote for the best movie soundtracks. Personally, I voted for Pulp Fiction cos I fucking looooove the film so much and the soundtrack kicks ass and it's how I found Dick Dale, he is mint.
Also voted for Singles cos one of my fave ever Pearl Jam tracks is on it, State of Love and Trust.
Of the ones listed, I had to go with "Trainspotting" 
But a special mention for "Rushmore", not a bad song on the disc (and I wish they'd included that Stones song from the November montage as well, but they didn't)
I'd go with in order..
Without question, the BEST theme ever (as distinguished from soundtrack) is Shaft.

I would pick Trainspotting.
But the best tunes from a movie would be The Royal Tennenbaums. They arent my favorite to listen to by themselves but they fit in the film perfectly.

Repo Man - great punk album Pulp Fiction - just great all around(though resevoir dogs is far better) Pretty in Pink - Good new wave stuff
Finally voted for Singles since it really help jumpstart the Grunge movement. First time I ever really got into and heard bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Smashing Pumpkins.
Some are missing though: Threesome (NO on that too!) X-Files (Movie) Godzilla (terrible movie, great soundtrack) Dracula 2000 (for that hard rock stuff) Joe Dirt (for that 70's stuff) Swingers (for that mellow/jazz/swing stuff)

What's on the "Say Anything" soundtrack, anyway? There's "In Your Eyes", of course, and I remember "Within Your Reach" by the Replacements in the film, but other than that...
Grease and Sound of Music gets my votes. Not the most sexiest picks but still endearing to me and maybe they were not on the VHS list for a reason. :D
More contemporary ones: Pretty in Pink and Pulp Fiction. David Lynch's Lost Highway had an amazing David Bowie song "Deranged" and the classic This Mortal Coil's "Songs To the Siren".
Trainspotting is quite good, as is Until The End Of The World (shame about the movie though)
Never seen the movie, but one titled Best Laid Plans has a good soundtrack, Massive Attack, Neneh Cherry, Craig Armstrong, Mazzy Star and Patsy Cline, and apparently The Jackel has a stellar line up as well.
Guilty pleasures for me are the soundtrack to John Waters' mainstream flicks Hairspray and Cry-Baby, full of short and snappy songs.
Any of the Twin Peaks soundtracks are okay by me, still played a lot after all of these years.
"regular" soundtrack faves (those with no loose collection of songs) included The Last Emperor, The Thing, and Barry Adamson's (ex-Magazine and Bad Seed) score for Delusion.
don't know if it was on the list or not...but the soundtrack for The Saint was pretty damn good...Orbital, Daft Punk, Fluke, ChemBros and Sneaker Pimps...I liked it a lot...
hell, I'm gonna go dig it out and play it on the drive to work tomorrow...

Not sure I'd go for the likes of Trainspotting where a collection of decent tracks have been cobbled together for the sake of a movie. It's like someone's just knocked up a compilation tape for you! Pulp Fiction's a goodie though just cos it's got so much dialogue in there too.
Blade Runner is a must. Also like Once Upon A Time in America and the Mission.
Lost In Translation.
Not only a great soundtrack album but probably my favourite album in it's own right of 2004. Some great Kevin Shields solo stuff, mad electronica from Squarepusher et al and The Jesus & Mary Chain to finish the album off (ignoring the dodgy hidden track of Bill Murray doing a karaoke Bryan Ferry!). Quality.
Out of that lot, I'd probably vote for Pulp Fiction as well.
Favourite soundtracks have to include any of the Sergio Leone/Ennio Moricone soundtracks (the 3 spaghetti westerns, and Once Upon A Time In America/In The West) - superb! :)
Danny The Dog aka Unleashed by Massive Attack is great,as is Air`s soundtrack to the already mentioned Virgin Suicides.
Best soundtracks compiled of various artists,Vanilla Sky deserves a heads up,as do Beat Street and Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2.

It's true that you can't put soundtracks where there are songs that were there for ages and compare them to those with tracks especially done for the movie.
Sometimes they do mix, a great example of this (and pretty impressive one I must say) was the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.. do you know many soundtrack that generated so many top 10 hits?
Maybe the Pretty Woman one?
Sure, Trainspotting is quite good, I can dig Born Slippy and Temptation any day, but those songs were done done for the movie.
Anyways, I don't buy too many soundtrack albums.. One my wife has which I feel was very good is The Crow.
It's easier to choose soundtracks with songs,because you would readily play it in its own right.Personally less so for a more instumental soundtrack,but no less important.It can mean everything.
So here's my choice of non compilation soundtracks:-
About Spotty's comments on "music made for the movie versus music that existed beforehand", I agree that there's a world of difference but sometimes it's better to go with "old" songs (i.e., songs not done for the movie) because a lot of original songs (at least rock ones) just...plain...suck. See "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" if you don't believe me :barf:
But that's why "Rushmore" is probably my favorite soundtrack, it mixes the new stuff for the movie (mainly instrumentals) with older songs that you might have never heard of before. Remember, when a soundtrack is done right, it will include songs by name artists that you might never have come across otherwise.
"Grosse Pointe Blank" has quite a good soundtrack and I also like "The Crow" for something harsher.
As far as instrumentals go, I like "Blade Runner" but then again its one of my all-time favorite movies. Make sure to get the original version which finally came out on CD about ten years ago.

How about the Philip Glass soundtrack for Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi? The pieces match the mood of the film from the placid beginnings in nature through to the climactic frenzy of modern city living.

I think it's got some good tunes on it, but the overall feel is not up to my liking for some reason. I find myself skipping over the techno-sounding stuff just because it seems out of place with a lot of the rest of the soundtrack.
I voted for 24HPP--not only is the soundtrack great because of all the Manc acts, but there's also some of Vaughan Williams's gorgeous Lark Ascending thrown into the film. (And a little Kajagoogoo to boot. Haha, kidding.)
Though if Velvet Goldmine had been on the list it would have been a toss-up for me.
