Seeing as Barry Bonds has yet to tie the Babe, I figured it would be safe to see what my fellow baseball fans here thought about his pursuit and all the media attention (especially in light of evidence that, pretty much without much doubt, shows he's been cheating)

On the one hand, I think it's definitely wrong for a man who uses steroids or other stuff to claim a record that the previous holder (talking about prior to Henry Aaron) managed to achieve on booze and hot dogs. Plus, Henry Aaron had to endure endless racism and death threats during his run. Sure, Barry might be getting it because he's black as well, but nowhere near the level that Aaron did, and stood up to with his own quiet dignity and his bat. Aaron did it clean, Bonds will do it with a stain on his record.

But if Barry wants to pass the Babe, and he's willing to use steroids or drugs to do it, there's part of me that says "more power to you" because of the known health-risk factors associated with any drugs. Look at all the atheletes whose lives have been cut short by steroids, and you'll see that Barry might not be able to enjoy his record for much longer if he keeps it up. A guy on sports radio brought this up a few weeks back, and the more I think about it the more I agree with him. If Barry's willing to kiss his old age bye-bye in pursuit of a record, and cut short the time he has left with his family, so be it.

So what do you all think?

I think cheating's a crock, and I don't care how many records he "beats," even he believes he couldn't have done it without cheating.

I'm pretty sure he'll pass the Babe, but I'd be more against him passing Aaron, for the reasons listed. Bonds is an arrogant prick, there's no question about that, but he's doing permenant damage to himself physically and no amount of records or trophies can stop that

Let's be honest, though: he's not the only one using, and I wonder how many more records we'll have to rethink in the years ahead when the shit hits the fan and players start testing positive

At the end of the day, Bonds himself doesn't believe for a nanosecond that he has the talent or ability to break the records without cheating. Says it all.

Agree there, or he wouldn't be using the stuff in the first place. He should be chopped off at the heals. . tell him he can't and couldn't attain the record because of his history with steriods. If they did that it might curtail the large issue we are having in sports.

Here's another thing. . .the equipment and training they have now far supercedes anything Ruth or Aaron were able to use. Today's player already has a leg up on those from the past. Increasing the advantage with steriods is more than cheating, it's plain dirty sportsmanship.

I feel that the best thing that can happen for baseball is that he just comes clean and admits that he took steriods. I don't think that he will ever admit to taking them, even with all the evidence that shows that he did use steriods. If you look back at his career numbers; he had 292 home runs in his first 10 years in the league. His next 10 years he hit 416. Something had to change somewhere for him to all of a sudden surge in power.

Due to this, I feel that his numbers should be removed from the books, since they were reached by cheating.

I try to ignore the publicity, and Bonds, as much as possible. (this coming from a guy who's second NL team is the Giants). I haven't seen his "reality" show on ESPN, but it just seems ill-timed to me, coming on the heels of these strong allegations of steroid use; why would an anti-media guy suddenly consent to something like that? (I've never watched the show, mind, just going by what I hear on sports talk radio).

Never before has there been such exitement about someone being number 2 at something.

The guy has always been a jerk. Now we all know he's a cheat as well. And thanks to baseball's lack of a policy on this until now there is really nothing they can do about it. Hooray!

okay i cant stand barry bonds as much as the next person, but why hasnt he failed a steroids test? now i am not saying he hasnt taken them, but wouldnt MLB nail this guy to a cross before he becomes the all time leader in HR's? ps why do i care? i cant stand baseball anyway!

I went to several Giants games in the past few years, and everyone cheered for Barry -- everyone but me.

I was too busy eating the lovely foods (garlic fries, hot dogs and beer) at the stadium to notice.

He's not Babe Ruth, by a long shot.

I hear that is still the case, that the fans in San Fran, still love him. It is the rest of the fans across the country that can't stand him, with me being one of them.

I thought it was funny how someone in San Diego at the beginning of the year threw out on to the field a plastic syringe on the field and the crowd was chanting drugie, drugie :D
