I have adopted the stance of best player I have ever seen and so as much as I would like to say Best or Pele the best I ahve ever seen was Maradona- a player who single handedly won a world cup for a very average side

I heard that Pele's '1000 goals' included youth team goals and all that.
Fuck me, i scored at least 5000 in the playground at school. Not to mention hundreds more at 'heads 'n volleys' in the park

I only heard of Pele and George Best. But according to what I have read in posts/threads concerning football, I don't know who to pick and I don't care. I'm only a Yank who cares about baseball and college basketball.

Madonna, by a country mile. Great little singer, and the complete all-round footballer. Still looks good for her age too, that Guy Ritche is a lucky chap. Oh, and she shoots people, is mates with Castro, and could very nearly supply enough charlie to service a decent NOOL day out.
Never understood the myth surrounding Pele. He's probably the complete striker, not the complete footballer, although having said that I've never seen footage of him doing stuff with the ball the likes of Henry or Ronaldinho do today. He was just the striker in the best ever team in the world and benefited from that. All he's really famous for is three misses. Oh, and now he advertises impotency drugs (though says he don't like them himself).
I cannot beleive everyone thinks Maradonna is the greatest ever.
Well with all these polls, it is always subjective, and my view is he was a cheating fcucking dwarf who was a disgrace to the game, but hey I am so pleased to see him now, makes my day;

In all seriousness, for me Paolo Maldini. It amazes and annoys me that a Defender rarely, if ever, wins any player of the year awards. Maldini, over 100 caps for Italy, 4 world cups, is it 3 European Cups, arguably still the best defender in Italy. Certainly the best defender in the world for most of the 90's.
Yet because he doesnt do a few fancy tricks hardly anyone mentions him...

Correct me if I'm wrong but he hasn't been a regular in the Milan side all season. In fact, I think he's 3rd choice leftback behind Serginho and Kaladze, no? So not the best defender in Italy by any stretch.
However, you're right, defenders never get any recognition, unless they can play the ball out of defence a la Beckenbaur or Moore. And you'd never see a goalkeeper finish anywhere in this either. Nor even a defensive midfielder when they're arguably the final piece in any jigsaw (Makele at Chelsea, anyone? Or Keane in the best United teams of later years).
Maradona though, that boy could turn a match on its head. Not many players today who could do that.

No idea why the "bells" reference was added. Probably from Morris Dancing, performed at pageants and festivals and dating back to 15th century England (originated in Spain and Morris comes from Moors, I think).

Sure, the cheating dwarf could dribble round people and had explosive pace over short bursts, but do we remember him for other aspects of the game, like accurate crossfield passes, workrate etc? For me, a player has to be able to do the donkey work as well as the fancy dan stuff, even if it doesn't suit him, because at the end of the day it is the team that wins, not the individual.
I am gonna vote for Franz Beckenbauer, he could pass, tackle, read the game, score goals and do everything that the manager requires in a player. You don't get many with the full range of skills like that. Only thing against him is his nationality!

Where does his workrate come into it then, if that's a benchmark by which to judge people. Beckenbauer barely broke into a trot at the best of times and swept up behind two other players doing all the legwork for him.
I'd imagine Maradona covered far more of the pitch per match than Beckenbauer did per tournament. Check out the Indie's 'scientific' guide to football today and the workrate of midfielders to defenders. And the only reason centre-halves actually increase their distance travelled is basically when they stroll over the halfway line for corners to use their height advantage.
Anyways, we're mostly all too young to appreciate Becknbauer. Maradona's the only genius of the modern era I can benchmark against. Even my age is too young to fully appreciate the genius of Cruyff. So why people vote Pele, I have no idea what they've based this on?! Hearsay? Or that one-legged goal in 'Escape to Victory'?!

I've always said Centre half is the easiest position to play on the park,or sweeper even easier....The best player of all time would never be a sweeper if he was that good..
Pele scored loads of goals in South America which we'll never see... There's plenty of footage of him in a Brazil shirt to make a judgement of him tho,but he still does'nt crack my top 3,maybe even 5.
It does seem like in most of these "best of all time" polls, people end up voting for someone from their own generation. I suppose it's tough to say someone is the best ever if you've never seen him play, innit?
