Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral are two of my desert island discs. The most recent one, With Teeth, is pretty good too.

Any other fans out there?

I would say I am a big fan of the classic NIN tunes

i've only got downward spiral and with teeth, but yeah they're pretty good, don't get regular spinning on my cd player but yesh not bad.

Ditto to what EP said, certain tunes are awesome. PHM and DS are both demented and I love most of both of em.

PHM and DS are always good for a whirl.

I especially love the tune Down in It but that's no surprise.

I also like Kinda I Want To.

Perfect for winding down from a stressful day!

I remember talking to someone on another messageboard, and they said that at the time PHM was considered a bit of a joke in the industrial scene because it has (shock, horror) melody in it.

Got that on at the minute. Something I Can Never Have is a masterpiece.

Liked the early stuff but never really bothered once they attracted a goth audience/image etc. Can't say I've listened to them for about ten years now.

Saw them in 1992 at Newcastle, tiny club about 100 there if that. Very entertaining, drummer played in a scaffold cage so his kit didn't get wrecked. Suitably impressed went to see them 2 days later at Manchester international.

Well since you didn't mention anything about the Manc show, I thought it wasn't worth writing about.

Emma, have you got the live album 'And All That Could Have Been'? Great live album.

No the Manchester show was good fun as well, it just came second. There were quite a few more people in that night, maybe 200. There were a few celebs in the audience , Clint Boon was there which surprised me as I didn't think it was his taste and a few others who I remember recognising but can't remember who they were.

They got through quite a few guitars each night, quite amusing because the crap ones were there lined up waiting to be smashed up rather than Reznor taking his angst out on whatever he was playing at that time. So he's playing his Fnder, Ibanez or whatever, takes it off, picks up a woolworths strat and wrecks it. I'll have a look if I got the set list from Newcastle Riverside, picked up a few from various gigs back then.

At the end of the Lollapalooza tour in 91, the crew placed the expensive guitars at the end of the row, so they could be smashed.

Reznor, apparently, wasn't happy.

And that'd be fantastic if you could find a setlist.

only rich people can afford to smash guitars that's why the who thing never worked with me. Populist rock n roll it is not, that goes for nirvana also.

no offense to mr.owens, but they havent made a good track since down in it.

I think I've worn out my copy of the PHM.

My favorite memory of PHM is not actually of a concert.

Instead, I recall that "Head like a hole" was played on the dancefloor in a nightclub called The Deep. The atmosphere was electric. I think that night was amazing!

Funny, though, I never heard "Down in it" on the dancefloor....

I also go with Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral, though I think that Pretty Hate Machine is definitely better overall, though Downward Spiral does have Closer, maybe my favorite NIN tune (and one of the best videos of all time!!)

when pretty hate machine first came out it was in my walkman constantly. i lost interest after the downward spiral and haven't really bothered with them since, although i do like to give down in it, head like a hole and sin a listen to on occasion.

I think they've had a few good songs since Downward Spiral, anyway, though I must admit I haven't bought any of their albums since Downward Spiral.

The Fragile (double album) is OK, but a bit forgettable. Starfuckers Inc is a belter, though (about Marylin Manson)

And All That Could Have Been (live album) is good.

With Teeth (new album) is pretty good. Similar to PHM, as it's about the songs rather then having a concept.

Have to agree with many here PHM was their best at longevity for me. Will still listen to that. At the time I thought Downward spiral was better, but it's hard for me to listen to it anymore. Also have Things Breaking Apart, which is pretty good as well; and the Lost Highway soundtrack that has a couple good tracks on it.

You really need to be in the right mood to like it, while PHM can really be listened to at any time because it is full of melodies. Downward Spiral is a much more grander album and it succeds more so than The Fragile.

That soundtrack was one of the reasons why he fell out with Manson, because Manson wanted to do the soundtrack himself. Reznor also did the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, which is pretty diverse. Where else would you find Dr. Dre, L7 and Leonard Cohen on one album?

Haven't listened to it yet, but I have been hearing nothing but great reports about it. I'll be seeing them at Download this year.

I lost my virginity with PHM on. It's all been down hill from there.

Has anyone seen them on this recent tour w/ Bauhaus & TV On The Radio? Not quite sure what to expect from Bauhaus as they're opening. During late afternoon.

I'm a NIN fan too. I like the older stuff best, although WT does have a couple of really strong tracks.

I saw them (him :) ) last year with a great live performance on a festival. I like NIN and their stuff for years now. I think the last album is by far the easiest to listen to.

I'm really hoping to catch a show this summer.

I recall an old Melody Maker review of Nine Inch Nails which described their music at the time as "sort of like Depeche Mode but with a serious attitude problem". And that was class!

I had to check them out after that and must admit that's exactly what they sounded like (Pretty Hate Machine). I love their more gonzoid numbers though - where they're tearing off at 200 mph. Songs like Wish, March of the Pigs, Gave Up, Big Man With a Gun, Perfect Drug. When they get too gothy and pretentious that's when I wanna reach for the skip button.

Oh, and Closer is soooooooo overrated. I like it even less now when I found out that Tom Jones actually wanted to cover it cos he said that when he first heard it he thought it was a Prince song cos it made him feel horny. How utterly yuck is that? :barf: :dead:

That's what he once said in a newspaper interview. There was this list of his ten current favourite records/artists and he included NIN's "Closer" somewhere in this list - when asked to explain why he put them in (I mean, Tom Jones? Liking Nine Inch Nails??!! Shurely shome mistake?) he admitted he heard this song whilst in the US and initially thought it was a Prince song cos it was so suggestive and sleazy. He then said something about it making him feel horny and admitted he wished he'd wrote that song himself....... :dotdotdot:

I mean, bearing in mind what Jones did to Prince's "Kiss", I bet Trent Reznor is well flattered. :barf:
