nah the horses appear to love the running and jumping thing. Think THEY should get a prize tho not some stupid wee monkey sitting on them, don;t understand that.
As for shooting them, well it's been said here before that their legs are impossible to fix, so they have to be shot.....until I hear a vet tell me that no equine fracture is repairable, I assume what is meant is "it would cost too much to fix him".
Horse racing does seem a bit strange in this day and age, one would have thought that since horses no longer pull us around all day, that motorsport would have taken over. (actually they ran the brittish GP at Aintree racecourse twice in the 1950's).
As a complete bonus fact........what's the oldest racetrack in use today?
The Autodromo de Enzo et Dino Ferrari at Imola in Rimini, Italy ( although bizarrely it hosts the San marino GP, SM not being big enough to get a track into), the modern circuit sits in a natural amphitheatre on the same site as an old Roman Hippodrome (horse track), so it's been used for racing for 2500 years...impressive eh?
Yeah, horse racing is crap... Always lose... Those horseys are just too damn quick!

Not sure I get this point, Steve. Even if it does cost too much to fix him, that's still a valid enough reason for an owner to shoot the beast, surely?!
And then serve him up with fries and a nice red onion marmalade! 
Its naive to think that owners and jockeys don't form a bond with an animal they've worked and trained with and are any less gutted by a horse's death than anyone else, no?
Interesting to note, the only horse to die in this year's National effectively broke its own leg whilst jumping, I believe. It broke its leg in a fall after unseating its rider at an earlier fence and had continued round the course under its own steam.
look at it another way these horses, they're specially bred to race, no? so if there was no racing they wouldn't exist anyway
they get to travel the country, meet their mates, do the race, go back home. they're like vikings without the alcomohol!

Well according to the below article on Yahoo, it looks like it the horse is going to make it or at least it is looking that way.

The doctor who performed five hours of intricate surgery on the colt was satisfied with the result, but blunt about the future for a horse who had put together an unbeaten record until he broke down in the Preakness Stakes. To be brutally honest, there's enough chance for things going bad that he's still a coin toss, even after everything went well," Dr. Dean Richardson said Sunday after the surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals.
Barbaro's surgery to repair three bones shattered in his right rear leg at the Preakness went about as well as Richardson and trainer Michael Matz hoped. It wasn't long after surgery when Barbaro began to show signs he might just make it after all.
After a dip into a large swimming pool before he was awakened -- part of New Bolton's renowned recovery system that minimizes injury risk -- Barbaro was brought back to his stall, where he should have been calmly rested on all four legs.
Barbaro had other ideas.
"He decided to jump up and down a few times," Richardson said, smiling. "But he didn't hurt anything. That's the only thing that really matters. It had Michael worried."
That's not much to worry about after the agony of the previous 24 hours. Barbaro sustained "life-threatening injuries" Saturday when he broke bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness Stakes.
His surgery began around 1 p.m., but it wasn't until about eight hours later that Richardson and Matz emerged for a news briefing.
"I feel much more relieved after I saw him walk to the stall then when I was loading him in the ambulance to come up here, that's for darn sure," Matz said. "Nobody knew. It was an unknown area going in. I feel much more confident now. At least I feel he has a chance. Last night, I didn't know what was going to go on."
I used to follow horse racing till about 15 years ago when I decided that whenever there is a great horse he winds up getting injured. Very frustrating, just as a sports fan. Those animals are so fragile! Stop horse racing? It'll never happen as long as there's money to be made.
mercy-killed sounds very sad, I dont like it, but I know there is such a stupid custom in horse racing. poor animals
Easier to kill them than to treat them properly, I suppose.
They say he'd have to be off his feet for six weeks which is tough for a human but nearly impossible for a horse, I guess.

I thought horseracing as a recreational sport. Even watched last year's Kentucky Derby with Smarty Jones. When I heard that Barbaro's injuries are life threatening and there was a possibility of him being put down, that changed my opinion of the sport.
Also, before Barbaro, I thought that having horse drawn carriages, especially the ones in NYC are cruel. I don't like the way horses are treated to be a spectator sport.

BTW York is favourite so far, cracking track and brilliant night out afterwards
