OK, we've done a poll on the strongest group, now which country is getting a free pass into the second round? To me, it's a tossup between groups A and G, and maybe H. I'll go with G. France get I think the weakest overall group then get to face a group H team in the next round.

Dunno about Portugal's group. I think you're shortchanging Mexico and Iran, especially Mexico. I think Mexico could pull a surprise, anyway. Granted, neither side are used to top level competition on a regular basis.

Group A.

Poland will walk it.

The Portugal one. Scolari must be the luckiest coach ever.

how tough can any group with the US team in it be??? :ignore:

but Groups G & H both look fairly weak...

Group G. South Korea only played as well as they did last time because the cup was on home turf. The other two teams don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of making round two. (which, of course, means there will be a complete surprise and they will both make it.)

Portugal, Germany or France's groups... Should be good to watch though, plenty of potential banans skins...

Group H: Spain is far the best (not that good to get far, but good enough to win the group)... Who is Saudi-Arabia, Tunesia and Ukraine anyway...

I voted A earlier.

  1. Germany plays at home, stadiums will be full of Germans.
  2. Arek said Poland lost against Columbia last night... so they should be 2nd...

About the group in which is France.

  1. They won against Mexico on Saturday (1-0), but what a boring match... Both teams are meant to be in the top of the famous FIFA ranking...
  2. Last night, they won against Denmark (2-0). I found that they improved... Henry scored a nice goal, Wiltord scored a penalty... Zidane looks very tired... Henry was very good, but Cissé...

However, what will it be against Switzerland ?

Wonder how many US citizens will be pulling for Portugal and Angola in that group to make it to the next stage?

Has anyone mentioned the fact that the USA were in one of the semi-finals in the 1930 World Cup? Sadly they lost to Argentina 6-1.

BTW, don't bother investigating the FIFA ranking rules. They seem to be making sense as you read them but when you're finished (adopts Transatlanticspeak) you're, like, say what?

Even though England probably have the weakest group - the Portugese pool aside - they will probably only just limp through into the knockout stages. A defeat to Paraguay, possibly followed by a draw against T&T, and they'll be under real pressure to end their jinx with the Swedes.

That said, I stil firmly believe that this wonderful gentleman called Peter Crouch will score the winning goal in the final. I don't hold any affection to any particular flag, but this would be wonderful for mankind if it happened.
