Anyone like Depeche Mode's "Music For the Masses"?

I think it's better than Violator, personally.

I've got all of the dm albums and "music for them asses" was never one of my favorites. It has some great songs, but overall...eh.

I have most of DM's albums also, and I think this one is OK but not that great. I love Strangelove, and there are maybe three other songs I thing are good and the rest is just filler. Violator is much better, an all time classic. Every song on it is good, IMHO.

I've got it but I didn't like it and it's put me off checking out their earlier stuff. Violator's still their best album, IMO.

Strangelove, Behind the Wheel, and Never let me down Plus, it had an ambient sound to it, almost Brian Eno-esque electronic-new-age-music. I guess the term "new age" is obsolete now and not so new any more. Violater was terrific as well.

sure. it got a lot of airplay in my tape player when it first came out, but i haven't listened to it in ages. still like it, though.

MFTM is good, especially "Things you said," "Strangelove," and "Nothing," but the remixes at the end are just filler. Black Celebration is a stronger album in my opinion, with the title track, "Fly on the Windscreen," "But not Tonight," "Stripped," "A question of time," and "A question of Lust." Violator has several good songs, but it's not as strong as Black Celebration or MFTM. However, it is far better than SOFAD, Ultra, and Exciter.

I also love this album! I think it's a much better album than Violator. My favourite songs are Strangelove, Never let me down again, Nothing, Sacred, The Things you Said, and Behind the Wheel. It's actually the first album I bought that was by Depeche Mode, (I'm only 18, so this wasn't in 1987, obviously.) and I love it because the lyrics to "Strangelove" are so mysterious and intriguing to me.

Violator and Music for the masses are simply fantastic and along with 101 they are my most favourite 80's DM albums

Rather like it, especially the way it segues between songs. Top cuts: Strangelove, NLMDA, The Things you Said, and Nothing...the rest, not so much.

Does Agent Orange count as being on the album? Cuz I rate that quite highly as well.

It came along at the right time in my life to where I quickly wore out a cassette copy. I bought the CD last year, mostly for sentimental reasons.

Haven't listened to it in ages, but I suppose I like it well enough. I loved it when I was a black-clad mopey teenager, but now, it just hasn't got the same appeal.

I actually like Speak and Spell, their first album, quite a lot. I'm sure that's not a commonly shared opinion, but I don't care. It's just good light, fluffy, snyth-pop. A touch of homo-eroticism in a couple songs, though. I haven't listened to it in quite a while, though.

Have to agree with most that it is not my favorite album. However, it was, at least in the US, there defining moment and was their peak in popularity. With MFTM, DM was selling out full stadiums (such as the orange bowl, where 101 was recorded). Plus if I think of the DM sound, I think MFTM is what I think of.

MFTM definitely key to their success. Violator was their greatest pop contribution...they're alright!

I love the way it segues from "To Have And To Hold" (love the Russian in the beginning) to "Nothing." Just very well done. :)

This is a top Demode album. Black Celebration and Violator are not far behind at all.

Maybe "Music for Them Asses" was the original working title , and the record company made them move the letter... either way it is a cynical title for a rather overall bland, shallow album. "Never Let you Down" is the best toon, and DMode imitated New Order by using Shep Pettibone for some fine remixes of "Behind the Wheel" and "Strangelove" (i forget the precise details of who remixed what so kill me)

Well i think that "Music For The Masses" is a great album, but "Violator" and "Black Celebration" like me more!!! :)

Yeah dont mind it. I think Violator is better.

Buying & listening to the remastered version made me re-discover MFTM. Until now I found it rather average, but I changed my mind. It is nearly as good as Violator. Just replace the remixes at the end of the original version by the B-sides: Agent Orange, Pleasure Little Treasure, Route 66, Stjarna and Moonlight Sonata, and you get a nearly perfect album. There are a few fillers, of course (Pimpf, Sacred), but all in all it is pure listening pleasure. Oh, and the remastered version of Behind the Wheel is absolutely great.

Although I've lked them for years,this was the first album I bought,when I used to buy those shitty cassettes.Only this one was a special edition cassette with MFTM and Black Celebration on otherside.Like it even more now than then.Don't know why,because It's got some strong songs on,only Little 15 and To Have And To Hold put the mockers on for me at the time.I think Little 15 is a well written song.

I agree with Jesse. I prefer Black Celebration. And then Violator and MFTM, in that order.
