Avid readers of my rarely updated blog and on here, will realise that I dont particularly like the company I work for. But now, I have been offered a new job, higher basic, less hours, closer to home, better prospects, better bonus etc etc.

Only problem is, I got promoted this past friday. Oops.

any suggestions on how to approach this without causing a Bush-like diplomatic disaster?

OK, I can see why, given your diplomatic track record, you may feel the need for advice. But I can;t fathom WTF you would ask on this place for...diplomacy and NOOL? go together like vodka and catpiss.

PS, meet the universe's sense of humour, it sets these things up in our lives cos it's bored.

PPS...you actually CARE if you leave scorched Earth and ashen bridges behind you? :evil4:

And Liam, fuck the old job then if this new one is ... um, the one. Better regret the things you've done than those you haven't if that is any advice at all

I'm guessing you accepted the promotion?

The more quickly you tell them that you've been offered another position the less painful it will be on all sides.

Say something like "I'm glad I was given this opportunity for growth etc etc etc. Thank you for having the confidence in me and my abilities blah blah blah. However, I've been offered a position that I really can't turn down. It's closer to home...and is more closely suited to my long term career goals" EDIT: Don't say better job more money etc... keep it more neutral obviously.

Jobs understand that you gotta do what you gotta do.

I agree with ChrissMari. No sense burning any bridges.

I agree with Boatraceface - they're not human so fuck them.

If your new job is better, your current people might offer you more to stay. Unlikely that they'll move themselves closer to your house though...

And as for burning bridges, not many companies refuse to accept people back. Lots of companies say they wouldn't...

And by the way: Congratulations!

Well, when I worked at Kodak, somebody left for another job, and his supervisor had a bug up his ass about this guy, so he had all of his gate records checked (badge swiping in & out of buildings, phone calls, clock in & clock out times, etc.) and found that the guy had spent quite a lot of time over the years on the phone with his wife. So, the supervisor had this info put in the guy's permanent file, and when he tried to get hired back several years later-NOPE, sorry. So, I guess it depends on how much of a cunt his current empployer is.

Hmm.. be careful..

I got a similar offer a couple of years ago. Company offered me ten grand more to move, and when i resigned existing employer offered me an extra ten grand to stay.

I jumped, and found that the new employer was just a fascist weirdo alcoholic c___. Lasted two weeks, and went back to the old employer to find they'd got a new manager in.

Lost two big well paid jobs in two weeks. Feckers.
