Two questions for Rocket Mick:

Why do left and right get switched about in a mirror, but up and down stay the same?

and

How does one effect a pick slide on an electric guitar?

Prompt answers please - I am on stage in half an hour!

On an electric guitar you need a gadget called appropriately enough a slide..... however if you want to show off you can use the following items......

A chunky metal ring

A bottle neck(ensure it has been ground down well)

A coin of some description( this tends to make a god awful sound so is best suited to thrash metal or punk bands.)

A zippo lighter(classic and amazing as the guy was so wasted he couldn't stand up but still belted out a fair tune.)

The mirror thing I dunno(but look forward to finding out.)

Thanks Minx, but I don't want to know how to play slide guitar. I want to do that cool thing that Barney does from time to time where he slides his pick down the E string of the guitar and it sounds cool.

The new boy tried it at Glastonbury and he fucked it up.

I want to get it right first time when the Aberdeen order are round for the footie next week :thumb:

I don't know if this will help, but... The reason why letters look reversed in a mirror is because you are presenting them to the mirror reversed. The reason why someone coming toward you can read the message on your T-shirt is because the letters on your T-shirt are reversed (from your perspective) when you wear it. If you printed the words on the T-shirt so that you could read them (from the inside of the shirt), the words would look reversed to an approaching person but they would look great in a mirror.

No. Not sure how hard they are, but they're certainly plakky. Someone must have one that he's lobbed into the crowd at a gig.

Do you think it matters how hard it is?

I only have soft ones here.

Well I could be wrong on this one, but I thought only metal or glass would work as a slide on an electric guitar... :confused2: perhaps if it is only for one note in one direction it doesn't, but your plectrum would definitely get fucked so have another one handy...

He slides the pick in his picking finger along the string in from the bottom towards the top nut. The result is a note that starts high and falls towards the open note.

He normally does it on Temptation.

Do we look in the photos normally just like other people see us but different than in the mirror, or is it I don't even know what I look like?

You don't know what you look like, since you're used to looking at yourself "backwards" relative to how other people see you. I like to think I'm much better looking from other peoples' perspectives. :)

RE: Bernard's slide technique....

I shall have to investigate on my dvds... usually I'm not watching his fingers....lol

I've always thought of him as more of a singer than guitarist....

(cue a big debate and cheeky comments.)

Might be, not sure. Had decided no, but now might have decided to think about changing my mind. Again.

Minx, you can hear what I'm on about HERE. Sadly (or maybe not) he's got his back to the camera.

He always does a pickslide there though - you can see it clearly on one of the DVDs.

If anyone's got a copy of that Jools Holland appearance from last June, Barney pulls it off lovely and Cunningham fucks it up.

And Shug - fuck off!

Um, and you know what you look like from photographs ,surely?

Although even then you are still seeing yourself differently from how the rest of the world sees you, apparantly.Although they reckon in the minute you die one of the things you realise is how the rest of the human race has been seeing you all your life.Or something

First, yeah, you do know what you look like from photographs, which is why most people are never happy with their photos. They're used to seeing themselves in a mirror.

OK, here is the rest of what I had before, which I had gotten rid of cos I figured it was a bit too wordy. Anyway, by popoular demand: One way to start to get a handle on this is to take a piece of paper with your name written on it. Look at it in the mirror and it will be reversed. Now turn it vertically. You will find that the lettering is reversed, but it is not upside down. That should start to give you a clue as to what is going on. Now take your finger and point to the first letter in your name, both on the paper and on the mirror. Notice that there is a one-to-one correspondence -- if the letter appears on the left hand side of the paper from your perspective, it appears on the left hand side of the mirror.

Take a piece of thin, translucent paper and write your name on it. Stand in front of a mirror and hold the paper up so that you can read the paper normally. Now look in the mirror. You are seeing the back of the translucent sheet in the mirror, and the word is not reversed -- it looks completely normal. Now turn the paper over and look at it in the mirror. It is reversed, but so are the letters on the back of the translucent sheet. Note that you turned the paper over -- you reversed it!

Now get out your webcam and get to it! :)

Kind of on the mirror topic.....

Why is it that when some women look in the mirror they see a reflection of themselves from 10-15 years ago??? Is it an eyesight thing??? :confused2:

Mutton dressed as lamb scares the heck out of me,

So much so that I have asked some of my most brutally honest friends to do a mutton check on whatever I'm wearing when I go out; In case I have scummed to the freaky place where I can no longer tell.

Can any one explain this to me?

Shellshocker must answer the SACRED question in order to prove himself worthy of this honour.

SHELLSHOCKER:

HOW MANY CALORIES ARE THERE IN A PICKLED ONION?

ChrissMari wrote:

Shellshocker: How do magnets work!?

The short answer is that in most atoms, there are an equal number of electrons spinning in opposite directions, thus their charges cancel out. In magnetic materials, hoewever, there are more electrons spinning in one direction than in the other, which results in a net magnetic field in one direction or another. The more atoms you have with an electron spinning imbalance, the more stongly magnetic the material is.
