Superman Returns.

While i'm not the biggest superman fan, i do like a good comic book film.

Haven't seen it yet, but I plan on taking the family this 4th July weekend. My wife wants to see the IMax 3d version. Not sure if that is worth the extra money or not. . .but looking forward to it. will let you know once we watch it.

I'm intrigued by the premise this time around (Superman has been gone for a bit, comes back and Lois is a mom and so on), if it were just the same rehashing of the origin story I doubt anyone would be interested. Might try and check this one out.

As far as the first ones of any movie series being the best, I have to disagree with Barney Army on at least two counts: Spider-Man 2 was more adept and less tied down to the origin story than the first one (thus lots of character development beyond the typical "whoa, I'm a spider-man!" stuff), and The Empire Strikes Back totally wipes the floor with Star Wars's more kid-friendly approach.

A series that I'm actually not eager to see rehashed is Indiana Jones. The first one was really the only one that still holds up (though the moments with Sean Connery in the third are fantastic, the story itself is just a retread of the first, with the Nazis and the treasure and the burning....sorry, I channeled Professor Frink there ). So to see Speilberg/Lucas/Ford trying to recapture the glory now...is akin to seeing Elvis perform "Hound Dog" in the white jumpsuit in 1975

spiderman 2 was a bit different as it laid the roots for at least 2 future villians, both having contact with pete in the film

agreed, but for a second I was thinking of X3,which sucked, but that wasn't Singer it was that punk Bret Ratner.

Massive Superman fan as a nipper. No Gene Hackman,no Terrence Stamp,and Christopher Reeves looks like being a doubt...It sounds shite already!

Superman and especially Superman II!Brilliant!! III and IV forgettable(save for a bit of Richard Pryor,probably his worst ever film role,all the same)

Could be wrong,but I expect to walk away after seeing it thinking it could,and should have been better!

Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther evokes some interest at least..

Went and saw it today. It was better then I expected. I actually liked it better then the latest X-Men movie, which suprised me since I've never been a big Superman fan.

Saw the IMAX 3D version today. I'll seperate the movie and the version seperately.

First, the I have mixed feelings on the IMAX 3D version. There were only 5 3D portions of the movie, so it had you taking on and off the glasses. The 3D was amazing though. I wish they did the whole movie in 3D. They really have come long ways from the old red/blue glasses from when I was a kid. There was a couple parts I really felt that I was really experiencing the action, the ship sinking part was breathtaking in 3D.
A few negative partson watching it at an IMAX screen, is that since the picture is stretched to fit the screen, there are e few times that clarity is lost. . .especially when the camera pans quickly across the screen. Also a close up of a charactor on such a big screen felt like I was a fly on their cheek, because of this it was kind of hard to get fully involved into the storyline.

The movie was great. Kevin Spacey WAS Lex Luther. . .I think he stole the movie in acting, really great job. The new Superman (don't know his name), smoothly acted similar to reeve's Superman. . .but he pulled it off really well. No complaints there. I thought Loius Lane was a bit young, and not what I expected. . .ok, but should have been someone else. Story-wise, I think it was good (but it might have been better seeing it on a smaller screen).
Special effects were amazing. Certian shots of Superman were really cool. Though the rest of the film was filmed in a similar fashion as the first 2, the special effects looked real (though I really thought Superman was flying when I was little). I think it could be the best special effects in a comic book movie (though I haven't seen X3).

All in all, great movie. Should have been Superman #3. Don't let the change of actors scare you. Highly recommended. (IMAX is recommended only if you want to see really cool 3D effects, which were spectacular).

I love a good comic book movie but Superman is just about my least favorite superhero. Nevertheless, I'm sure I'll drag the wife out to see this one.
I agree with Taboo that the premise of leaving for 5 years does make it more interesting. I also agree that some things seem more dated after a while. I used to think Superman 2 was fucking awesome. Then I saw it again a few years ago and it seemed a bit silly. I also agree witrh Taboo on Empire Strikes Back and to a lesser extend Indy Jones. I disagree with Tabsy on Spiderman 2 though. I know everyone says the second was better but I much prefer the first. The second one is a chick flick, IMHO.

I saw a 3D dinosaur movie on IMAX a few years ago, and the 3D effects kicked ass! So I know what you're talking about there. It sounds like I'll be seeing the regular version of Superman, though. Good to hear they did a good job on the movie. I think the actor is Brandon Routhe, btw.

This might sound too cheesy, but if they do another Superman movie, I'd like to see him take on some aliens. IT gets a bit boring fighting Lex Luthor after a while, especially as Lex has no superpowers. Or perhaps have him go back to outer space and fight some injustices out there. Something somewhere to give him a good fight. I dunno, just an idea.

It's opening at August 17th here. I'm looking forward to Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther. Gene Hackman was ace in the old movies...

I'm more a Batman and X-Men guy. Superman is a bit to good for my opinion.

But I agree, I've always been a Batman guy myself. Liked how he had personal struggles and his fight against bad had a bit of a dark-side to it. Plus, he doesn't have superpowers. More realistic.

Never cared for Marvel though. All the people got superpowers from silly events. At least Superman's makes a little more sense. . .though I actually like the goody-goody side of him.

Yeah, I like Batman too. As far as Marvel, I agree that they got their powers through silly events, in general (it seems almost every Marvel from the 1960's got his/her power from some sort of radiation!), but I think in terms of the actual comics themselves: the stories, the characters, the backdrops, etc., Marvel is actually much more realistic than DC.

Took the kids to see it in 3D at the IMAX today! "But we want to see Garfield 2..." "NO YOU DON'T!"

The whole film feels a homage to Christopher Reeve's films,an out-take of Marlon Brando's message to his son gets dusted over and makes an apperance here,John Williams' rousing music is also present,Brandon Routh is good as the new Superman,uncannily like Reeve. Kevin Spacey? Steals the show,just like any film he appears in. Special effects are amazing paricularly the plane/space shuttle sequence in 3D though the interior scenes on big screen are a bit dizzying. Some good twists too.

I just read that they are reissuing Superman 2. Apparently, Richard Donner, who directed the first Superman movie, was fired halfway through filing the second one over a dispute with the producers. They hired Richard Lester to take over for Superman 2, and he got the credit. The result was an entertaining, but somewhat campy and not too deep movie. Now, Warner Brothers has approved Donner going back over the footage he filmed, and coming up with a Richard Donner version of Superman 2. The result, available on DVD in November, will be about 70% Donner footage, 30% Lester footage. I think it'll be a much better version. If you want to know which parts are Donner's & which are Lester's while watching it, Donner says "the good parts are mine." Bring it on.

I thought Kevin Spacey undoubtedly stealed the show, but there wasn't enough of him in the film! The effects of the plane going down were amazing, but how Lois survived getting thrown around like that It ran a little too long i think, and it's not a patch on Batman Begins in my opinion - but i do think Batman's the best superhero
