Tom Waits and Gavin Bryars: Jesus Blood Never Failed me yet.
Strangely hopeful too, but seriously bloody sad.
Any song the BBC play to accompany the montage of England after they have been knocked out of the World Cup or European Championship![]()
This time it was NUMB .
Not that i'm still sad.Soon got over it within 24 hours because i'm used to it now ![]()
Previous competitions it was Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis in the 2002 World Cup and in 1998 it was that song by Green Day (Time Of Our Lives?)
wow so many come to mind, I liked me some gloom rock back in the day...
James - out to get you Cure - Disintegration Led Zeppelin - Ten years gone Nine Inch Nails - something I can never have Pearl Jam - Black (acoustic for added tearjerking value) Peter Murphy - cuts you up Bob Dylan - You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go U2 - with or without you

seconded. one of my favourite songs of all time. yes it's sad, but at the same time its so uplifting and just generally makes me feel good.
the unplugged version is one of the best performances of it. followed by the live at benaroya hall version. absolute genius of a song.

Yep Black by Pearl Jam that can always get to me; specially the line ' I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, i know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky, but why, why can't it be me!!!'
I some times just re play that line if I'm drunk and in cry mode

Does anyone else have a song with no lyrics that gets to them?
For me it's Soviet by electronic, I don't know why. but towards the end of it, it just makes me well up.

That's what I used to think until I was corrected by a friend who was a far bigger Pearl Jam fan than me....

Pearl Jam's Black? ugh. I don't know about in Engerland, but over here no song that horrendously overplayed sounds sad anymore (not that it ever did in the first place to my ears). Makes me want to put a boot through the radio instead. Surely there is some other Pearl Jam song that is far sadder than that radio fodder...like Immortality or Off He Goes.

I specified the acoustic version because among other qualities it has the added "we, we belong together" lyric at the end

POPE - off he goes and immortality good calls sir.
Surprised no one has mentioned the masters of depressing sad songs, Radiohead.
To name a few:
Pyramid Song Street Spirit Creep The Tourist
Most depressing, I think has to be: Exit Music (From a Film)

I think Trent Reznor even said Johnny's version was definitive.
