God save the Queen. Rule Britannia (wrote by a bloody Scot). The Stars and Stripes.... But real sad songs... O' Flower of Scotland  No really the whole of Berlin (Lou Reed) and almost anything by Billie Holiday.

In A Lonely Place by New Order.

The Bush song was better. I mean it's not that lonely as that of New Order.

Indeed!

I don't know if anyone mentioned "Seasons in the sun" by Terry Jacks yet.

If my rather shoddy memory serves me correctly, "Seasons in the Sun" was named in the top 10 of some worst song of all time list a few years ago. Yes, another silly list.

Ah yes - 'would you please kill me now i've got seasons in the sun, in my head thanks to you so please kill me - here's the gun'

& don't get me started on 'honey' :tank:

Going with sad, and not romantic/love song:

Drugs don't work - The Verve Wires - Athlete Nothing Rhymed - Gilbert O'Sullivan

Do NOT laugh at the last one - very clever lyrics.

Ish.

Ditto.

And as for the saddest stuff...

Joy Division-- --Atmosphere --LWTUA --Heart and Soul --24 Hours --The Eternal

New Order-- --IaLP --Mesh --Leave Me Alone --Elegia --1963 --True Faith [just something about that song...] --most of the 'Technique' album, while it IS dancable --WftSC --Turn

The Other Two-- --Superhighways --The River --Selfish --New Horizons --You Can Fly [almost the same effect as Superhighways]

Otherwise-- --'Stable Song' [Death Cab for Cutie] --mostly anything from Mira --'Hurt' [NIN] [Johnny Cash] --'A Million Miles Away' [The Plimsouls] [don't ask. i dunno.] --'Adam's Song' [blink-182]

...I guess that's all I can think up at the moment, really.

ETA [edited to add] How the fuckin' hell could I forget this: --anything by Morrissey and/or the Smiths

:nonono: How could I have forgotten...

 What? :shine:

how about 'love on the rocks' - neil diamond? (quite a few cracking tearjerky themes actually - twin peaks, brideshead, deerhunter)

some really good weepies already mentioned here, think i'm gonna make me a little comp and have a bit of a blub. spiritualized 'ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space' makes me well up too. dare i mention 'souvenir' by omd? 'somebody' by dm?! please don't hurt me

'starmaker' from the kids from fame soundtrack! i could do this all night.

"do i listen to pop music because i'm miserable or am i miserable because i listen to pop music?"

Saint Etienne - Like A Motorway

Very clever song too. I don't listen to lyrics much but I was quite proud of myself when I worked that one out (after listening to the song for about 8 years!). The boyfriend in the song is dead by the way in case you're as thick as me.
