Bruce springsteen

I've decided after hearing two songs, although both cover versions of his work he might be worth a closer inspection.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good album by him, or will i be better off with a 'best of'?

If you only get one album, it should be Nebraska.

Just him, an acoustic guitar and a harmonica.

A beautiful album. No bombast, no 'Born In The USA' crap.

Just great songs.

All I knows about Bruce Springsteen can be summed up in the following two statements:

1. The girl's name in Thunder Road was originally Chrissy. Which every guy I ever date feels the need to tell me.

2. He originally wasn't signed because AR men thought "oh we've already got a jew with a guitar (lol bob dylan)" but it was a-ok once they found out he was catholic. This is also like my so-called love life. haha

The thing about Springsteen, it's the words. Start with BITUsa. The title was grabbed by Reagan for political purposes but the song's actually about the working man, as usual - lyric appended below. Try to find the low-key acoustic version.

Check out Badlands and Racing In The Street on Darkness On The Edge Of Town and the whole of The River. And you have to hear Thunder Road, Backstreets and the title track on Born To Run.

My old man is really the person to ask about Springsteen, but I've been to a couple of his concerts so I'll put in my two cents. Darkness on the Edge of Town and Born to Run are both good. Born in the USA has some good stuff also, by which I do NOT mean the title track. That song got way overplayed.

"The River", "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "Nebraska" are all strong albums.

Funny, I've been playing Nebraska all weekend, great collection of songs that might best be described as 'dark'. This tends to be the album that the people who don't like the bombastic nature of some of Bruce's work go for. Darkness still sounds pretty good to me, though I'm not a big fan of Brooce, my brother is the fan so I've wound up hearing most of it.

The Ghost of Tom Joad is an interesting album too but I'd start with Nebraska.

I was misled for a long time by the whole appropriation by Reagan of Bruce, but after a while I realized that beneath all the hype was a genuine artist. I burned my sis's copy of his greatest hits CD from a decade ago, and there's some great stuff there. I realize Bruce is up there with Dylan in terms of being so "legendary" that you feel like there might not be anything to it, but like Dylan he actually does merit a second look

um, it's actually about a vietnam vet who doesn't have a lot to 'punch the sky' about.
