Was wondering how far is Manchester Academy 1 on the Manchester University campus from the City Centre. Is it walkable or would the bus be the best option. I remember passing it on the way from the Airport to the Centre once but can't remember how far out it is. And what is this venue like, is sound quality decent, what capacity & are the bars decent.

I've never been in Academy 1 only the other 2 strangely enough..
anyway, it's not walkable from city centre but you can get almost any bus from piccadilly gardens and it will take you right there.
It's maybe a 15 minute ride
It is walkable,About 30 mins. but as the buses run about every minute you might as well just get one of them.

haha it's walkable if you don't mind walking more than a mile and then standing 3-4 hours for a gig
even the website says to take a bus from the bus station
Leave the bus station on Chorlton Street turn left and walk the short distance up to Portland Street. Turn left onto Portland Street and find the bus stop outside the big insurance building set back from the road. Look out for buses in the 40s and ask the driver for the University. Get off at Dover Street near Holy Name Church or ask the driver when you think you are in the University area. Cross Oxford Road to the Union which is the large, three-storey building with red banners draped outside it.
It's like a mile and a bit.. I'd not walk that on gig night when the bus is so cheap

CM that is very lazy. I used to walk back from school into town loads last term when the weather was nice, and that is all the way in fallowfield past the curry mile!!
It IS walkable from the city centre, probably take you about 25-30 mins.
Bus is easier tho, they're really frequent, just get anything that goes down Oxford/Wilmslow Road.

a mile+ is not walkable when there are buses that go the same way :D
I used to walk from Failsworth to City Centre down Oldham Road an awful lot.. I'm not lazy lazy, just practical

To walk from Manchester city centre to the Academy takes 25 minutes, depending on the speed you walk, traffic and the weather.
Sound quality depends on who you are seeing there, although its usually quite good. I mean, its never been bad all the times I've been in there. But it was brilliant for Editors and Kloot but just acceptable for The Ordinary Boys.
Bars: Stay away from KRO unless you are loaded. And the oxford isnt any great shakes either. If you can, blag your way into the uni and pay £1.60 for a pint of stella. Other than that, stay in city centre, or Northern Quarter (I recommend Cord Bar) and then jump on the bus. Should cost you 75p, no more as long as its driven by an illegal immigrant from Eastern Europe.
You could walk it 20-25 mins or you could get the bus it costs about 1pound 20p on the bus also the bars are ok aswell Kro bar just across the road from the academy is ok.When is it your going?

Its Ryan Adams who is playing there but it hasn't been announced if its a solo performace or band performace. Most likely it will with the band as I don't think venues that have been picked for the tour are seated.
Just another thought. Since this venue is part of the Uni, would it be later curfew rather than the normal 11pm finish 
Right, when I were a lad, I would walk all the way from UMIST to Cheadle and that's MILES.
How I would get from the train station to the Academy would depend on how long I had before the gig. Less than a couple of hours and I would get a cab directly to Jabez Clegg, which is across the Road from the Academy.
Any longer, and I would walk from Picadilly to the Star and Garter, then to the Retro bar, then Joshua Brooks, then Lass O'Gowrie, then down to Revolution and Generation X, then Cro Bar, then the Firkin, then that sports bar on the green, then the Phoenix, then Jabez Clegg.
Under no circumstances at all would I get a bus - they stink and are usually slower than walking such a small distance.

I have to say though.. last time i was in manchester i bought a weekly buspass and only used it the couple times i went to oldham..
rest of the time i just walked everywhere...
