At the risk of sounding like Statto I've been getting right into soccer trivia on Wikipedia. Started with an argument with a mate about Partick Thistle ever having played in Europe (they did, UEFA Cup 73/74 season). I've now spent the last two hours checking out results from past games between such mighty European giants as Videoton (UEFA Cup runners up in 1985) KV Mechelen (UEFA Cup and Super Cup Winners in 1988) and Upjest Doza (what a name!!!) What I learned.....

Rangers competed in the first ever European Cup Winners Cup Final in 1961 (getting humped over both legs by Fiorentina  )

In season 1966/67 not only did the mighty Celts lift the European Cup but Rangers made the ECWC Final again (getting humped AGAIN:laugh: ) and Kilmarnock made the semis of the UEFA (or Fairs Cup as it was)

No club ever managed to retain the ECWC though four finals between 93 and 97 saw the holder reach the final the next year only to lose.

Until CSKA Moscow won the UEFA Cup in 2005 no Russian team had ever one a European trophy.

Anybody with similar statistical based trivia feel free to post below.

Wikipedia is one marvellous website.

I'm always keen to remind the Welsh that the last time they reached any major world championship was the 1954 World Cup.

Nottingham Forest have won the European Cup (2) more times than they've won their domestic league (1)

Only 4 players have scored in 2 World Cup Finals - Pele, Vava, Breitner and Zidane.

The only player to captain winning teams in the FA and Scottish Cup Finals is Martin Buchan. (Aberdeen + Man Utd)

The only player to score for two different countries in World Cup Finals is Robert Prosinecki. (Yugoslavia 1992 + Croatia 1996)

Only 5 teams from their nation's capital cities have won the European Cup - Real Madrid, Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade, Ajax Amsterdam and Benfica. (Lisbon)

Numbers were worn on the back of shirts for the first time on Aug 25th 1928.

The English League introduced 3 points for a win in 1981.

Yellow and red cards were introduced in Mexico in 1970 at the World Cup Finals.

The 1st substitute in English football was Charlton's Keith Peacock on Aug 21st 1965.

I know it's been mentioned on here before but.....

The first ever black player to play for Celtic was a New Yorker called Gil Heron in 1951. He was the dad of "founding father of rap" Gil Scott Heron. I've seen GSH in concert twice and there's always a fair few members of the audience in Hoops. Fuck knows what he makes of it all!

The only team with a 100% record in all competitions against Liverpool is Worcester City, who defeated them 2-1 in the 1959 FA Cup. Liverpool sacked their manager Phil Taylor shortly after the game, and appointed someone called Bill Shankly instead.

Possibly the worst player ever to play for Celtic was a Brazilian named Scheidt!

Rumours that they were after the Celta Vigo player Turdo appear to be unfounded......

They were hoping to make Celtic Park a mutch greener place by investing in £5m worth of Scheidt.

There was also panic at the coroprate buffet as then manager John Barnes said he intended to use Scheidt to fill a number of roles.

Correct. Still think Dunfermline making the semi-final of the UEFA Cup is weirder!

Next thread should be on football upsets and great comebacks. Would take something special to beat Boro's two great escapes last season. Any takers?...

As for shock results.... Dundee Utd beating Barcelona home and away in the UEFA Cup semi final has gotta be up there with the best of them

Here are the full facts regarding PBs glittering career at maine road:

Peter Beardsley

Manchester City FC 1998

POSITION Forward

DATE OF BIRTH Wednesday, 18th January 1961

PLACE OF BIRTH Newcastle-upon-Tyne

DEBUT Wednesday, 18th February 1998 in a 2-1 defeat at home to Ipswich Town (Aged: 37)

CLUB CAREER (During loan spell) 5 League apps (+1 as sub)

SEASONAL RECORD: 1998

In a playing career spanning 20 years, Newcastle born Peter Beardsley played almost 900 games for ten different clubs. Having started at Carlisle as an 18 year-old in 1979, Beardsley's best playing years were undoubtedly spent in the colours of Newcastle United and Liverpool where he spent twelve of fourteen seasons from 1983/84. By the time he became a loan player (from Bolton Wanderers) at Maine Road on February 17th 1998 it would not be too unfair to say that he was in the twilight of his career. Having said that though even if he had lost some of his old speed and stamina, City fans could see what a marvellous player he had been. He'd always had a terrific footballing brain, the ability to kick with both feet and was still capable of defence-splitting passes. Capped 59 times for England (including the World Cups of Mexico '86 and Italia '90), Beardsley's arrival in Moss Side coincided with a desperate battle against relegation to the Second Division. It was a battle doomed to ultimate failure and perhaps not even one that a Beardsley in his prime could have prevented. Following his debut in a 2-1 home defeat by Ipswich on February 18th, Beardsley then replaced Georgi Kinkladze at half-time as the Blues won 3-1 at Swindon. A 3-0 defeat at Reading was followed by back-to-back wins against West Bromwich Albion (1-0 at home) and Huddersfield Town (3-1 away). Four days later, City lost 2-0 at home to Oxford, a game that sent them to 20th in the Division and marked the last of Beardsley's 5/1 appearances for City. The programme notes for the game with West Brom claimed Peter was 'on a mission to keep City in the First Division'. Even though the Blues won 5-2 at Stoke on the last day of the season, they still failed in Beardsley's mission and the likeable Geordie was still a loan player - this time with Fulham. (Ian Penney - author of The Legends of Manchester City)
