The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt.
Over 1,200 varieties of watermelons are grown worldwide in 96 countries.

Watermelon's official name is Citrullus Lanatus of the botanical family Curcurbitaceae. It is cousins to cucumbers, pumpkins and squash.

In 1990, Bill Carson of Arrington, TN grew the largest watermelon at 262 pounds that is still on the record books (1998 ed. Guinness Book of World Records).

It's been forever since I had a watermelon, I think what ruined them for me was the endless back pain from having to help unload a shipment of them years ago, one by one, and put out on display. :(

I do believe that rockmelons are known at "Cantaloupes" up here. I personally hate those as well.
I have always gone by the outside color when picking out a watermelon and knocking on it to see how hollow it is because apparently more hollow it is more ripe it is, not sure if that's always the case.
Actually, I just like picking up a watermelon and knocking on it in the grocery store while people stare at me.
