Top stories: Plane Terror Plot Disrupted Threat Involved 'Mid-Flight Explosions' Passengers Face Chaos After Bomb Breaking NewsSecurity raised to 'critical' Plane Terror Plot ThwartedUpdated: 09:16, Thursday August 10, 2006Police have disrupted a major plot to blow up as many as 20 planes over UK and US cities with explosive devices smuggled aboard as hand luggage.Police have arrested 20 people in London - the culmination of a covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months.Big queues were building up at UK airports as passengers trying to board international flights were not being allowed to carry on normal hand luggage.Security sources are said to be believe that liquid explosives would have been used and could therefore be missed during the x-ray screening of such luggage.Queues at Heathrow Sky News' Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said he had been told the threat was imminent and those arrested were mainly young, British-born Asian men.The Home Secretary John Reid said the alleged plot was a "major threat" to bring down a number of planes. The Home Office's level of security - indicating public risk - has been raised from 'severe' to 'critical'.The US government has also raised its threat assessment to the highest level for commercial flights from Britain to America.Flights have been cancelled Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said: "We believe that these arrests (in London) have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted."In Britain, there have been lengthy queues at most airports with many domestic flights cancelled.Flights scheduled into Heathrow were cancelled - apart from those already in the air.Flights to Britain with the German carrier Lufthansa, Spanish airline Iberia and Greek carrier Olympic were cancelled. The British Airports Authority urged passengers not to go to Heathrow unless absolutely necessary.:: Security experts said such an attack would have a precedent - during the 1990s, a plot was foiled to blow up 12 Western airliners simultaneously in Asia. The plot, which would have killed thousands, was scuppered when plans were found in the Philippines base of terrorist Ramzi Yousef who also planned the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing.

(still) Feeling a little sick and a whole lot angry about this latest news. Empathy for all those waiting. Relieved that it was stopped..
EDIT : oops too much information last night. current Security issues being experienced everywhere now has to be considered more closely. just being practical but not scared at all. Situation is Sadd really.
bastards.wonder if it was timed on the opening of the 9/11 film in america.thank GOD that we have a good intellegence network
20 planes!! Can't believe such a high number.
Even though they've prevented these attacks it makes you wonder what else these people may have up their sleeves :(
Cunts.
Looks like it's gonna cause disruption for a long time coming too. You seen some of the implications of this? No hand luggage whatsoever. And you're not allowed the likes of mobile phones or iPods on planes anymore. Farcical, but probably necessary given the circumstances this vermin will stoop to.

easier fucking said than done though Ron - you can't have normal air travel when they ban things like hand luggage!
Just had one of my mates going on about how his next door neighbours got arrested yesterday, they think in conjunction with this. Some local feeling seems to be that they should be packing all the Pakistanis on these planes and sending 'em back to Pakistan, and refusing entry to the country should they try and get back in!

Tell the locals: Many terrorists are British passport holders and a blanket reactionary deportation of immigrants means people will soon be complaining that we have no bus drivers, porters, cleaners etc...

Speaking from experience, most hand luggage is just people trying to avoid paying excess baggage because they're carrying too much. I can't remember the last time I saw anybody take anything out of the overhead bins on a flight except their washbag.
As to the Pakistanis, the report I read said they were 'British born of Asian origin'....
Our Frank just phoned from John Lennon Airport. He's works in baggage handling. he said its great. fuck all work to do. no moaning bastard passengers. He said it just tea drinking out the back and playing games of chase the ace with the lads. One of the slackest days he's can remember.
see...its not that bad for everyone.

I WAS rather planning to take me clothes over in hand baggage in Oct, cos there's no fuckin way they were letting me take my gadget bag in the cabin. time to consider plan B.
As for the situation in general, i dislike terrorists a great deal, they are chickenshit. It'll get so bad that getting on a plane will be like going into woolworths in belfast in 1978
Given my job, two things come to mind......

I feel sorry for the parents of kids on a four plus hour flight. How do you keep them amused if there's no hand luggage or are crayons, felt tip pens considered dangerous? Will the humble watch be designated to the hold as well for fear of being a remote control?
Defo sad.

Aye, I don't think it counts as a WORLD war unless Bere's lot kick it off, France surrenders, Belgium gets flattened in the crossfire, we do all the fighting and the yanks weigh in late and make movies about how they won it until the end of time (in this case, about 3 days after it starts proper I should imagine)

Unless it is proven that countries like China or India are involved, I cannot see a third major conflict. Just because Saddam Hussein's mighty army (ranked third by US Army rankings) surrended with less casualties than the French one in 1940. I wonder how long could last this WW3. The American army has so many weapons that, to make a balance, all the other countries of the world would have to unite to give a response. And I doubt this is going to happen someday.

Absolute nightmare for those with kids, where would we be without Top Trumps, and colouring books!! Lets just hope on a lighter matter that the airlines look to provide the necessary things to make the journeys less tedious. I.E sweeties, pop and crisps for all, as well as some decent reading matter. Also, what about people on medication?? Just thought about that.

Apparently tablet form meds are allowed.
I think they'll have to section off a kids and no-kids area of aircraft. I'm with Bill Hicks, I'm not allowed to smoke cos it bothers other passengers, I find this perfectly acceptable, but only if I can fly without screaming fuckin wee'uns. No offence whatsoever to those who have the wee blighters.

You are right maybe. Sometimes I wonder if we are not feeling like the parents of our grand-parents before WWI. I was teached in school that people were happy to go to war by summer 1914. It was said that all would be over by the end of the year, if earlier. And people lived in the hell of tranchées for 4 years.

+1. Oh, the happy days when I could smoke in the face of a "wee blighters" on a plane. "Wee blighters" should be banned from planes or pay extra-taxes for the inconveniance. I never understood the : under 2, journey free. And I think people should do like my parents did with me. They used to leave me by my grand-parents until the age of 6 when they travelled around. It must be hard to let the babies by someone if you go on holidays but I think it is a better option.

No, I bring carry-on because I hate checking my luggage. If I can do it all in carry on (obviously not likely for long stays) then I do. It's also good to carry with you what you can't afford to have have lost, as checked baggage does get lost sometimes. I even heard no beverages, including bottled water (tough for me) and no drugs except prescription drugs. I am glad that I don't plan on flying till February. Even gladder that this plot was foiled! It seems like Intelligence is one thing the US doesn't do as well as many other countries.

That's true. People thought WW1 would be a "fun" war, and they were horribly wrong, but I don't think too many people in the West have that opinion these days. Except maybe Bush.

As a parent I COULD take absolute offence to this....but I completely agree, didn't take our kids on a plane until they were old enough to behave themselves, and if the don't one look is all it takes. There is nothing worse than screaming/badly behaved kids on a flight (or in a bloody restaurant!!!)
Excellent idea, segregated areas for kids and non kid travellers.
Although, would that mean I have to put up with other peoples badly behaved monsters?

Nice to know some people have consideration for others. Sometimes you almost need to take young chilren with you, like if you're going to visit relatives or something, but if you're going to the Riviera for the weekend, the kids don't need to be there.

The Rochester Airport is basically stating the following:
Passengers may not have liquids or gels of any size at the screening checkpoint or in the cabin of the aircraft. This includes beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, toothpaste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency. Such items may be transported in checked baggage.
Passenger MAY have: baby formula, breast milk, or juice if a baby or small child is traveling, prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket, insulin and essential other non-prescription medicines.
Beverages purchased in the sterile area (area after the screening checkpoint but before the gate) must be consumed before boarding the aircraft.
So, that answers my questions about the baby bottles, anyway.
They are saying that if you have baby bottles you MUST drink some of the contents in front of an official at check in......

if by sad you mean FUNLARIOUS!
I must confess I am angry that I, as a person with an education, am having my life constantly threatened by Muslims and Christians and other half-witts. Time we gave them somewhere to just hold each OTHER back and leave us alone. Apparently Gpd/Alah says antartica is nice this time of year.....don;t worry, you're all true believers, he will provide the heat, shelter and food if you pray.
BTW, RE: Enigma.....The yanks now claim Bletchley park is in Iowa then...what? Maybe they cannae deal with having been out clevered by a limey faggot? RE: is this fake.....well I am the sort to raise the simplest objecttions ( remember my curiosty that 20+ ppl died from blast injries on a bus last year without shedding ONE drop of blood), but given that Govt is the pawn of big business before all other functions, I would conclude this is all too real, because the money pissed up the wall to day and in the coming months, will be a MASSIVE blow to airline profits. (Of course if I suddenyl hear that the taxpayer is underwriting it all, I'm back into suspicious mode.....doubly so cos of all the battles NIR and Ulsterbus used to go through to have actual DESTROYED vehicles replaced by the NIO.....bloody hell the NHS had a hard enough time replacing burned out ambulances.....so N,000,000,000 being paid to airlines for a few late flights, that will tingle my paranoia bone.
I want to re-iterate something I have said several times before.....terrorists are terrorists for a reason......it's because they do NOT represent their community. It's simple logic....if you and 100 mates believe some whacky shit, you go off and plant bombs and the like. If however your entire people side with you...you raise and ARMY and fight. The IRA pissed the UK Govt off, right....but if every nationalist leaning catholic in NI had picked up a gun and mobilized, things would have been a bit more serious, yes? My point is that the "all muslims should be........." line of reason falls down at the very first basic analysis...if it was ALL muslims, they wouldn't NEED this kind of shit, they could raise a fucking HUGE army (a smarter one than any christian army, given that muslims write science books, and christians burn em...wasn't Islam that torched the library of alexandria and set humanity back possibly as much as 1000 years).
If we do let this turn into a real live nuke sxchange ( who with mind you?)....we're not just talking about the loss of som replacable human units....we are talking about the extermination of humanity's entire history.....Plato...gone...Newton....gone....Einstein....gone.....NEW ORDER...GONE! I wouldn;t care, except nothing of us has left the cradle yet except some probes......the universe's memory of our species will be 2 plaques and a couple of cdroms.....and that's the only thing that really saddens me....all of the last 100, 000 years of our developement....pissed up the wall.

Of course it's just a small minority of Muslims who believe in blowing up innocent people. Hopefuly most people realize that. Those terrorists aren't true Muslims. I did find it sad though that after 9/11 they interviewed ordinary Muslim people in Middle East countries and many of them were somewhat glad that it happened, taking the "serves the US right" type of mentality. BTW, I assume you know I was joking about the US cracking Enigma.

I know. It was a joke, referring to Doctor?'s reference about how the "yanks weigh in late and make movies about how they won it until the end of time", hence the

Whoops, and I took a return swipe at you for it, sorry mate :D
(a fooking boring film BTW, I seem to recall trying to watch a BBC thing about Turing....NAH!)
In fairnes the yanks DID capture the Kriegsmarine's Enigma that used an extra rotor, from a damaged U-boot that the captain made a dog's dick out of scuttling.
Quite all right. These electronic swipes don't hurt near as much as the real thing! ![]()

Complete nutters, putting it mildly, the lot of 'em.
If it goes in the hold, it requires more support equipment to make a bomb I suppose, making it easier to detect. For instaance a bomb based on a binary liquid explosive as waas being talked about on the Beeb the last time I could be arsed watching, would be a doddle to spot on the scanner, but if it's 2 bottles of lemonade in a handbag with no ancilliary gear required to detonate ( a religious spastic having been [provided for this task), it's tough to spot.

I'm sure there is a little room for selective timing perhaps, but then again, the police are becoming increasingly paranoid on moving until they have evidence in place. I get the feeling this plot was imminent, and they acted when it was about to happen. Sure we will find out in next few days.
Recently, they've shot an innocent Brazilian dead, and torn apart the house of two seemingly innocent Moslem brothers in Forest Gate, who had allegedly had a dirty bomb, and found nothing. These blunders have alienated a Moslem community over here, and the police have to be very careful in moving at the right time to get a watertight case.

Like fuck they did, you've swallowed that hook line and sinker. Yet another Hollywood lie.
Simple fact is too many people in this world believe the pro-US propaganda that Hollywood is churning out by manipulating or in some cases re-inventing historical fact.
Enigma and the associated "code books" (actually, cipher-key tables) were first captured from U-110 by the British in May 1941, before the United States' entry into World War II. The British also captured material from U-559 in 1942. The U.S. Navy did seize German Naval Enigma material in June 1944 when it captured U-505 (the U.S. Navy's first capture of an enemy vessel at sea in 129 years).
The film caused irritation in Britain. Critics argued that U-571 failed to portray history correctly because, in total, there were some 15 captures of Naval Enigma material during World War II, of which the Americans carried out one (U-505), the Canadians carried out one (U-774), and the British performed the rest. While the British captures from submarines and weather trawlers provided critical information for breaking Enigma, by the time of the American and Canadian captures, the Allies were reading Naval Enigma routinely. Moreover, the American capture of U-505 by a destroyer captain on the eve of D-Day might have jeopardized Operation Overlord. However, as acknowledged by the film-makers, the story of the film is entirely fictional.
Shortly after the release of the film, BBC radio interviewed a former British naval officer who had been involved in the recovery of cipher-key tables from a German submarine that was on the point of sinking; he commented that the film was entertaining, though it had nothing to do with historical fact.
The movie has also been criticized for a scene in which the U-boat crewmen machine-gun Allied merchant crewmen who have survived their ship's sinking, killing them in cold blood as they float helplessly in their lifeboat. The implication is that the killing of survivors was typical U-boat behavior. Critics of the U-571 movie point out that this is an incorrect depiction of typical U-boat crew behavior. In contrast to the depiction of U-boat men in the movie, and to the behavior of German armed forces in other services and fronts, U-boat crewman almost universally followed the accepted rules of war; in a number of incidents, they helped survivors with food, directions and occasionally medical aid. Assistance to survivors only stopped after Admiral Karl Dönitz issued the "Laconia order" following a US attack on U-boats transporting injured POWs under a flag of truce (the Laconia Incident). Out of several thousand sinkings of merchantmen in World War II, there is only one documented case of a U-boat crew deliberately attacking the ship's survivors: that of the U-852, a Type IXD2 U-boat under Kpt.lt. Heinz-Wilhehm Eck, whose crew attacked survivors of the Greek ship Peleus.
There in fact was a German submarine designated U-571, but that vessel was never involved in events like most of those depicted in the film.
I didn't read your whole post yet mate, but......
I didn't even SEE that retarded movie, the info I gave was based on 3 different documetary films I have seen on the subject of Enigma and Bletchley park. Turing and his furst programmable computer cracked the original Enigma machine. However, admiral doenitz (I defo spelled that wrong) instigated the use of a machine with an extra scrambling rotor for use accross the wolf pack and possibly the surface Kriegsmarine too (memory eludes me). An example of a 4 rotor machine was indeed capture by the US navy, following an engagement with an U-boot during a convoy raid. The vessel was damaged, and forced to emergency surface. Standing orders said the captain was supposed to destroy the entire contents of the code safe, for some reason...presumably a desire not to drown, he legged it without doing this. ONce the US warship had taken the crew aboard, some yanks just strolled on to the empty U-boot and picked up the Enigma and codes like they were popping down to wallmart...no heroism, just shopping.
Is this not the case?
Or were you just leaping on me cos you thought I was talking about the balls talked in that movie?
EDIT: read it all now, I see where you are coming from, I would therefor suppose that I saw US made "documentaries" with English language dubbing :( Point taken and accepted JT.

Why let the truth get in the way of a perfectly good story? Well, at least they had a disclaimer that it was fictional, and the British naval officer did say it was entertaining. Why they felt the need to change the characters from British to American (I've said it before and I'll say it again-producers are fuckin idiots) I don't know.

I can't tell if you are taking the piss or being half-serious or what, so I won't comment.
But I really would like to see some opinion poll information to enlighten me as to what the political/social attitudes of Poles (and other Eastern Europeans) are. One thing that makes me a bit apprehensive about the arrival of 600,000 of them is the way I've seen so many interviews where they sing the praises of Thatcher (shudder!). Also the record of Poland and the Baltic states with respect to the Jews is, let's be honest, not terribly good (one of the Baltic states recently happily paid host to a reuninon of SS men, I seem to recall, and when Germany invaded Poland they had to order Poles to stop killing jews because they weren't keeping proper records). And are they likely to be anti-abortion and anti-gay? I really don't know, maybe they are like Italian Catholics and don't pay much attention to the Pope? I hope I'm worrying over nothing, but as Poles are now by far the biggest ethnic minority in the country I think it would be useful to find out.

There is many mega-posters in Poland saing Ireland is the best place to make a job-career. And many of my country fellas is leaving, to discover new places, to meet new people, to settle.
- Why do Poles hate Jews, as you guys said? I dont know if its true, but I know Poland was the only country durin WWII where helping jews was punished by death. Why? Cose it was a mass procedure. Many people died helping them, and now we are called antisemit. Very fookin funny.
- That all has nothin to do with Major Terror Alert In The UK. Or maybe some polish plumbers working in the UK did some state of emergency, heheheh

But French lost all the wars and are cowards, Poles lazy antisemit right-wings Catholics (even if they are the best plumbers in the world) so that ...

I simply refuse to believe that life in Crewe is preferable to life in Poland.
Really.

You are quite right this has nothing to do with the subject of the thread, so apologies for that.
I genuinely don't know if Poles are anti-Jewish _now_, but I really think you are on to a losing argument if you try and claim they weren't during the 30's and WW2 period. It's pretty well documented that they were. Some nations were better than others, and Poland and Latvia were amongst the worst. Though none of Europe, including Britain, and the US comes out smelling of roses it has to be said.
I'm not anti-Eastern European immigrants, just a bit bemused by it all. The scale of it is unprecendented. Where my parents live seems to be slowly turning from an asian area to a Polish one. Also it irritates me a bit that we'd never have countenanced such a open-door policy for people who weren't white - as it is the number of visas granted to Afro-Carribean and asian people has been cut to make room for eastern europeans.
Surely the fundamental reason why Poles are coming here is because Poland has nearly 20% unemployment?
Anyway, what I do think is that the UK government should be loudly condemning the racism of the French, Germans and Italians in NOT letting the Easterners in. The impact would be much less if it had been spread over the whole EU as it should have been. It suprises me how easily the other EUniks have been able to get away with this.
(PS as for Latvia a quick google turns up "In March 1998, Riga, the capital of Latvia, witnessed a march of some 500 former Latvian SS soldiers commemorating the 55th anniversary of their collaboration with the Nazis. Senior members of the Latvian armed forces and some members of the Latvian parliament participated. Following a public outcry, notably more from the West and from among Jewish and Israeli organizations, high level Latvian officials even tried to defend those "idealists" and "nationalists" who joined the SS or its auxiliary local forces. Perhaps coincidently, less than two weeks after the Latvian Nazi veterans proudly displayed their symbols and flags, a pre-dawn blast, the second in three years, rocked the only Jewish synagogue in Riga.
