Top stories: Plane Terror Plot Disrupted Threat Involved 'Mid-Flight Explosions' Passengers Face Chaos After Bomb Breaking NewsSecurity raised to 'critical' Plane Terror Plot ThwartedUpdated: 09:16, Thursday August 10, 2006Police have disrupted a major plot to blow up as many as 20 planes over UK and US cities with explosive devices smuggled aboard as hand luggage.Police have arrested 20 people in London - the culmination of a covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months.Big queues were building up at UK airports as passengers trying to board international flights were not being allowed to carry on normal hand luggage.Security sources are said to be believe that liquid explosives would have been used and could therefore be missed during the x-ray screening of such luggage.Queues at Heathrow Sky News' Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said he had been told the threat was imminent and those arrested were mainly young, British-born Asian men.The Home Secretary John Reid said the alleged plot was a "major threat" to bring down a number of planes.The Home Office's level of security - indicating public risk - has been raised from 'severe' to 'critical'.The US government has also raised its threat assessment to the highest level for commercial flights from Britain to America.Flights have been cancelled Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said: "We believe that these arrests (in London) have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted."In Britain, there have been lengthy queues at most airports with many domestic flights cancelled.Flights scheduled into Heathrow were cancelled - apart from those already in the air.Flights to Britain with the German carrier Lufthansa, Spanish airline Iberia and Greek carrier Olympic were cancelled.The British Airports Authority urged passengers not to go to Heathrow unless absolutely necessary.:: Security experts said such an attack would have a precedent - during the 1990s, a plot was foiled to blow up 12 Western airliners simultaneously in Asia.The plot, which would have killed thousands, was scuppered when plans were found in the Philippines base of terrorist Ramzi Yousef who also planned the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing.

Just had one of my mates going on about how his next door neighbours got arrested yesterday, they think in conjunction with this. Some local feeling seems to be that they should be packing all the Pakistanis on these planes and sending 'em back to Pakistan, and refusing entry to the country should they try and get back in!

Speaking from experience, most hand luggage is just people trying to avoid paying excess baggage because they're carrying too much. I can't remember the last time I saw anybody take anything out of the overhead bins on a flight except their washbag.

Our Frank just phoned from John Lennon Airport. He's works in baggage handling. he said its great. fuck all work to do. no moaning bastard passengers. He said it just tea drinking out the back and playing games of chase the ace with the lads. One of the slackest days he's can remember.

I WAS rather planning to take me clothes over in hand baggage in Oct, cos there's no fuckin way they were letting me take my gadget bag in the cabin. time to consider plan B.
As for the situation in general, i dislike terrorists a great deal, they are chickenshit. It'll get so bad that getting on a plane will be like going into woolworths in belfast in 1978

Aye, I don't think it counts as a WORLD war unless Bere's lot kick it off, France surrenders, Belgium gets flattened in the crossfire, we do all the fighting and the yanks weigh in late and make movies about how they won it until the end of time (in this case, about 3 days after it starts proper I should imagine)

Unless it is proven that countries like China or India are involved, I cannot see a third major conflict. Just because Saddam Hussein's mighty army (ranked third by US Army rankings) surrended with less casualties than the French one in 1940. I wonder how long could last this WW3. The American army has so many weapons that, to make a balance, all the other countries of the world would have to unite to give a response. And I doubt this is going to happen someday.
