Something that I wanted to do for years is a possibility now, hosting NOOL from home. I got information and it would now cost me less to do this using a commercial cable modem.
Recent issues where WenOrder lost his hard drive (he has a server like mine with the same provider) made me think that it can happen any day, and I'd have to pay for support while I'm fully qualified to do it myself.
So, it's still a possibility, because price of home internet + price of hosting of NOOL is superior to prince of commercial cable modem...
I need to check the bandwidth and stuff to make sure the flow would be adequate, but now is the time I have to ask myself this question.
If I do that, do I need to buy a server or a good workstation will do the job?
My home computer is running 24/24, never had any issues with this.. but what the hell is the difference between a server and a workstation really? if I pick a basic server, without RAID or any fancy features, it's just a very big frame with no screen and no OS for a bigger price than a workstation.
Anybody think it's doable to have a performant workstation (I'm not stupid, I would buy me a better one and use my current PC), so a Pentium 4 3 GHz with hyperthreading.
I mean, it will be used as Web server, DNS server and email server.. probably ftp server as well, but those are basic features, it it would run Windows Server 2003.
I hope anybody can give me advice on what is the best pick... my goal is to have it reliable after all... and I've seen Dell servers, they are huge and noisy.. plus they charge the shipping for it (150$) while workstations are free shipping. (Reason why I talk about dell is because I wish to put the price on a monthly term to compare with costs of the current hosting)
