RIP Tower Records

As a few of you know I worked for Tower Records for four years until my store closed in March

it gets better......

Tower is Toast

Yeah, I read that in the LA Times that day Ed, just another sad indication of things changing, that's gotta be the death knell for a once-proud chain. Spent a fair amount of cash on indies and imports from all around the globe, plus the deep catalog they seemingly always had on stock was a definite pleasure to browse through on rainy days (quite common here).

Didn't know you read the Rope though, I've been reading it (though I don't post, I'm not even registered actually) for years, I've found it a great source of info (and personal bitchiness) all this time.

when visiting london i always used to pop in the one in piccadilly circus on the way to my brothers.i always paid my bill though

I used to love Tower Records, always called into the one at Piccadilly Circus. Would frequent to Fopp now anytime i'm across the pond.

actually Steve (FAC_51) sent me that link. He is an ex-Towerite and his wife actually still runs a Tower store in Southern Cali.

My reaction to Steve was "OMG Tower is fucked" I can see it now. My lil store was one of the few on the East Coast that was still in the black. Tower was so bad off that they could not keep what they had. I was feeling pangs of not being at Tower cause I will always be a music geek.

Now I feel a LOT better cause I have a job and Tower paid me a nice severence to go away. My mates at Tower are really screwed.....

When I lived on Long Island for four months, Tower Records was my record store of choice. It's where I picked up some of my choicest 80's CD's and even a New Order book! Very hard to come by at the time! Too bad, really. :(

Philly does have a lot of good independent chains, although I think they were better in the late '90s. I remember going to the several independent and used stores on South Street to find cheap bootlegs, but none of the stores seem to sell bootlegs anymore, with the exception of Noise Pollution.

But, the Tower on South Street and the recent one on Broad Street aren't bad. They both have pretty good music DVD selections.
