I'm thinking of getting on of these.

I've not got a record player at all at the moment.

Anyone got one? A better one?

If you`ve got to set it up each time you wanna use it,how much use would you get from it?

That's quite expensive and considering that the "Audacity" software is freeware. How nice of them to include that as well eh?

I transfer Vinyl to pc using a lead into my sound card and then capturing the sound with ADOBE AUDITION.

the one in the pic does look nice though Col.

Rule one of buying audio gear......

If they hide the spec sheet, it's cack, avoid it. If it was any good they would be blowing off about the incredible frequency response and the fabulous signal to noise ratio.

Audition is that which used to be cooledit pro isn't it?

Does it still have the noise reduction doobry built into it? It's excellent i have steinberg Clean here somewhere and make a lot of use of waves xnoise xcrackle xclick and xhum, and the one in cooledit is very nearly as good, despite the "pro" products retailing for stupid money.

I should explain that it's great for records and tape, because, by capturing a snippet of the pre-roll from the record or tape, you can "teach" it the noise profile for that medium.

Last year, I bought a pre-amplified turntable and a kind of little box (including a software like audacity but a bit better). Sound comes in with RCA jacks and comes out to your computer via USB. The lot cost me less than 100 €...

I'll stick with me old Technics cheers :)

I think it's shit. Almost alle noise reduction plugins are. Except the Waves plugins. They are incredibly expensive but *very* good *IF* you use 'em correctly and with caution.

Yes, but it still beats the shit out of the music (especially the treble region). And you get nasty artifacts too if you overdo it.

Actually, Waves X-click and X-crackle are both fully capable of adding more artifacts than they remove on some tracks. My version of truth for C2 for instance, has a few clicks from fast attack sounds that I cannot be arsed edditing out of the sounds themselves....but passing x-click or x-crackle over it...good $DEITY it sucks. I was finishing a wee mix of it for 14K the other day and the clicking drove me to distraction, all the more so because I could not find the other click killer I use ( couldn't even remember the bugger's name).

I think the cooledit/autition one is not too bad if used sparingly.

I am desperate to transfer some of my vinyl to the computer. What lead do I need that will fit into me computer?

easier, yes, but not so cheap.

If you are using a DJ mixer with your deck, you need the ubiquitous PC audio lead.....3.5mm stero minijack to 2 phono's.....running from the line out n the mixer to the line in on your soundcard. If you are using a hifi, it's probably going to take a 6.7mm stero jack ( headphone plug) to stero minijack.....a trickier lead to find, and you also need to be veru on-the-ball about remembering that headphone outputs are designed to run into fuck all impedance, and can also put out enough power (if cracnked RIGHT up) to melt the ADC's on your soundcard.

If you wish to connect a deck directly to the PC, forget it, no PC soundcar I have ever seen can apply the RIAA curve to an input signal. ( the RIAA EQ curve is how you get bass on records, it's all taken off, pressed, then put back at playback....which explains not only why pluggin a record deck into a cd player ( line) input, or vice versa, creates such almighty shiteness, and also why decks have such an iritating propensity for low frequency feedback ( albeit that it sounds killer on a techno tune :D ) )

Now a USB tape deck would be interesting!

plug your tape player into a mini disc player, then you can transfer it to your computer. sounds complicated, but shane assures me that's how he does it.

then again you probably already have your own way to transfer tapes.

Yes, that's my point too: one should use noise reduction in general very cautiously :)

I even try to NOT use any noise reduction. Muffled music with artifacts is way more annoying than hiss to my ears...

Sounds like what I'm already doing. If they can produce a USB turntable though, they can produce a USB tape deck. Would certainly help getting stuff done, I've still got 200+ tapes I haven't converted yet. Little Boy Lost has done some for me, and I've done hundreds myself, but there are still a load of goodies to be digitised - it's finding the time!

It costs about 50 € including a software. It works with turntables and tapes... But, just like you said, it takes time...
