Help

I just moved from Boston to Hartford and have been looking for a job for about three weeks. So, today, I fill out an application for a security office in New Britain and they ask me to go to a site in Hartford for an interview. Basically, all they need is a warm body they can pay $10/hour. But, the location is at a hospital and I'd be working a shift from 11:30pm until 7:30am, in which I'd be watching cameras in a control room or greeting people at a door and showing the around the hospital. The location and hours aren't great, but I need money for rent and I can only work evenings now because I'm taking classes during the day. Should I just take the job and see if I make it through training or should I just keep on looking?

Actually, for an unskilled job here $10 is a fair amount. The national minimum wage here is about $5.30.

assuming you do 3 or 4 hours of work a night take a bus to an from work, how much would that leave?

try stacking shelves at a supermarket perhaps they pay a bit better.

My relatives and that's all about it. A tiny place called Sedalia... Not sure if it's worth it. Not much for me down here either.

Best job I had in college was being a waiter. Worked 20 hours a week and made $1500-$1700 a month (back in 1995-97). Stressful job, felt like I worked 40 hours, but the tips were great, didn't report all of them so my taxes were low (if any of you are with the IRS, I'm only kidding I paid all my taxes).

Good way to meet pretty birds as well.

It's not a big deal anymore. I went to the security office to fill out the paperwork for the job and I was told by someone at the desk that my application was reviewed again and because this time someone noticed I don't own a vehicle, hiring me was against company policy.

Back to job searching.

It's hard, especially when you're dealing with the unwashed masses of plebian unskilled workers to make sure you'll have someone who'll show up...

It's more so that the employers know that someone will get back and forth to work on time and dependably. Also, there's a certain level of "oh this person has some financial responsibility and therefore they might not steal from me" to it as well..

They don't need to pay for someone who'll be constantly late or missing work because of the bus...

i say this as someone without a license who only drove once in her life for 1 hour (and that was in another country on the wrong side of the road) and depends on public transit to get back and forth.

It sucks ass but they've got their own twisted reasoning behind it.

fair enough. it still sucks. i somehow managed to get myself to work on time before I owned a car as well. I would hate to be refused a job beacuse I didn't own a certain posession that actually has very little to do with my job.

Public transport for an after hours security guard may be a bit tougher though.

But it's not about the possession it's the affect of the posession or not having it on your job... it's not like "if you don't have a television or a designer suit you won't be hired"

I know I'd be a more productive person if I didn't have to travel 40 minutes on the bus for what would take me 10 minutes to drive...

but i and my employer have currently sucked that up (mostly because I'm scared to death and the idea of driving makes me want to vomit--but I'm also not in an unskilled job)

Some won't especially when you are talking about where the applicant pool is infinite. "I'll hire someone who DOES have a car tomorrow..kthnxbi"

That's (your minimum wage) something I can't fathom. I've got a position that's skilled, not entry level (but not mid career either--dunno what you'd call that) and i'm only making about 55% more than what an entry level McDonald's employee would in your country. It's just about average--i'm doing slightly lower paid stuff because non-profits and political organizations tend to pay less at these levels.. but not significantly less

If I could make twice as much money doing what I do (at 70-80 hours a week) I'd be as happy as a pig in shit.

There's all these older people complaining about the work ethic of people my age--saying that we want to make 50 thousand dollars right away straight out of school without "putting in our time". 50 thousand straight out of school number 1) isn't all that much money number 2) would stop the fucking "delayed adolence" problem that we supposedly have. We'll be able to grow the fuck up because we'll have the money to grow the fuck up.

I'm working my ass off in a good job using my education and not able to afford a place to live not-hand-to-mouth without a roomate.

Now the difference between here and other places where students have the same complaint is that it's not deterring kids from going to college because it's that or mcdonald's. (for below the poverty line). In other countries you can get entry level "professional" positions without going to school, so people can be a bit more selective in how they go about things.

Good idea with telemarketing! Shite job, but they are ALWAYS looking for warm bodies and generally pay a pretty decent starting wage (in good 'ol Canada anyways). Let us know what happens.

Also, who the heck wants to be a security guard for $10/hour? Isn't the stress (dealing with problem patients and so-on...) totally not worth what they pay you?

I did telefundraising. It was crap, but I made $10 an hour plus bonus. I have worked night shifts at Haagen-Dazs and Dairy Queen in Philadelphia, but that's not close to bar work. Bar work requires experience, which I don't have. If I could work a 9 to 5, my options would be different. But, because I'm still taking a few more classes in school, although I have a BA in English, I can't work during the day. That pretty much limits my options.

After I did an internship this summer doing PR for a music group in Boston, I figured I should take some more classes in music just to have more experience and knowledge. And, classes are much cheaper in Hartford, CT, than at most schools in Boston. But, I'm going to a supermarket on Saturday for a group interview. Maybe I'll wind of stacking shelves in the evening, like Dave Gahan once did.

No I got that you weren't arguing with me.

That is the adult minimum wage. Kids working at Maccas or in the supermaket earn quite a bit less. Don't ask me how much less. All I know is that many loose their jobs once they hit 18.

Unfortunately our country is no longer quite the worker's paradise it once was. The current government has just introduced individual contracts for many workers (i'm still on a collective agreement). Many have been forced to trade conditions, work longer, and/or loose penalty rates (weekends, overtime, etc) Quite a few have even been sacked and remployed as contracters on a lower wage and thus have to provide their own insurance and superanuation.

Still we do supposedly have minimum conditions. Just enforcing them is a pain. How does one individual take on a huge corporation?
