They're not spiders, the subtle clue is in the use of the word fly in it's name.
They don't leave cobwebs becasue they are not spiders.
The picture at the top isn't a crane fly, it looks more like a harvester. Crane fly below.

My Granny used to call them 'jenny spinners'
Anyone else heard of that or was granny just (as we suspect a crazy old bird)?????
Also why do they always look drunk? never seen a single one fly in a straight line or with out bumping into everything
I'd have thought London was right up their street, extra warm city microclimate and all, weird.
Coupla my co-workers think they are called JOHNNY long legs for some odd reason.
I believe the beastie originally pictured is refered to as Daddy long legs in bits of the good ole US of A.
They really don;t ever seem to fly right as minx says.....like they're arse-heavy and haven't the power for lift AND control. Probably have a ludicrously short lifespan...."I think I'm just getting the hang of the flyi.....UGH..Croak!"

I'm getting shitloads of 'em in Sarfff London, constantly humping the lightshade. Perhaps there has been a cull in Crouch End.
And yup, that pic came from a straight Google of 'daddy long legs' after vast amounts of alcohol. I didnt think it looked totally like the things buzzing around my bedroom, but it was a nice pic.

Is there some sort of confusion here about a daddy-long-legs and a crane fly? The first is a spider that cannot fly, the second is a fly that cannot spider. Totally different animals. ![]()

Thanks, I read the "daddy long legs" part and ignored the crane fly....thus my talk on spiders.
ON THE CRANE FLY: cool note I saw on the Discovery channel, did you know, as adult insects they have no mouth? The eat all they can as larva, change and don;t eat and only mate. The end up dying of starvation.
My city has had a bumper crop of praying mantids. The Chinese variety. I saw one that was about 8 inches long.
