I Need some Computer help.

I'm thinking of replacing my laptop, but i'm confused as to what to get, Laptop or Desktop.

But with all this come bloody processors, i'm confused as to all the different ones and AMD or Pentium.

any advice over which is the best?

Fast as you can, as much memory as you can and a massive hard-drive.

Apart from that, go for the cheapest. It doesn't matter whether you get AMD or Intel - they're just the same.

If you want to carry it around, get a laptop. Otherwise get a desktop, you'll get more for your money.

There's a cracking shop in Aberdeen - Everest Technology. They offer a range of specs so you can compare prices on their website!

I got mine from there and it's great. They make them to order so you can delete anything you won't need (fast graphics in my case) and add things you do want (5.1 sound for me). With most places, you're buying a load of stuff you'll never need.

I think AMD is better but other people will say the same about intel... these people would, of course, be wrong. It also depends on what you're doing with it. I don't game.. and I do some graphics intensive things but most of the time it's just there for email and wrecking havoc on the internets.

but with that in mind, I agree with the comment above.

I just bought a cracking laptop the other day it was on sale for 1000 bucks, but other laptops in the same price range came with a lot less memory and a smaller harddrive, even though the processor clock speed was the same (it's an intel i couldn't afford similar with an AMD processor)

So rather than figuring "oh I'll save 150 dollars and upgrade it myself" i got what I wanted for cheap.

I also got a laptop rather than a desktop so I could be mobile, i.e., if I have a deadline I won't miss a match I want to see, or I can still go to my BF's house and work.

Ho much can you afford to spend?

Thats plenty. You really need to decide if you have any real use for a laptop though. I.e. is it worth paying 50% more for the micro-technology, and if you really are going to use it outside the house. Also bear in mind laptops are costly fuckers to upgrade, relatively.

£800 will get you the nuts, in terms of a desktop. Three months ago i spent about the same on an HP Media Center + 21" TFT Screen, Pentium 4, TV tuner, DVD-RW dual layer + lightscribe, 200 gig hard drive. And its already much cheaper.

Top tip: dont bother with TV tuners as a buying point cos they are shit and dont work.

Don't buy off the shelf FFS, you never get what you want, and never know what's in it or how weel built it is. Putting them together is a doddle, everything can only go in one place. And of course windows is SO easy to install ( apparently).

yeah, right.... easy to install.

Beware Dell! Their customer service redefines incompetence. I've haven't seen my PC for a fortnight, after my hard drive failed after only 3 months.
