North Korea

Seeing as I am apparently incapable of serious political analysis, i would love to know what everyone thinks about the current North Korea nuclear crisis.

I open up the floor...

Kim is that little younger brother that keeps breaking stuff in your bedroom to get attention. I think his threats are used for acceptance and to gain world attention.

Everything i think about North Korea can be summed up by saying I think they are nutbags. There is no regime more bizarre. I can't understand the Weird Leader, despite trying, so I do not trust them to 'test' weapons.

They are absolutely fascinating, a little amusing and very frightening to me.

Loads of sanctions are placed on them by the US. By showing they've got 'the bomb' they've got Bush's attention so now they can do some bargaining.

There was an underground explosion that showed up on seismographs on Sunday morning but it was less than a kiloton equivalent, not the Hiroshima 12kT equivalent that everyone is rabbiting about, so either it was a fake or it failed.

You can usually tell how serious a crisis is by how the closest stock markets react and Japan's is virtually unchanged this week.

Think it all depends on how China react and they've already called the act 'brazen' - cue a naughty puppy being taken out back for a whipping!

On the China thing there was an interview with there chinese foriegn minister and he said its not chinas place to get involved.

Clearly the spread of nuclear weapons is a major concern to any right minded person. I think the South should be encouraged to invade. I dont think it will take much to topple the regime in the North. China & Russia would have to approve this plan. I'll give Mr. Putin a call tonight........

There's a UN resolution in the offing so maybe they don't want to undermine that. China is not unknown for saying one thing and doing another entirely. AFAIK, China supplies virtually all aid and trade to N Korea so you could say they're firmly in China's pocket. There were missile tests in N Korea earlier this year that China 'advised strongly against' and got ignored. They must have been forewarned of the 'nuclear' test too. If N Korea's government gets the boot then x million unwelcome visitors go flooding across the Chinese border though.

Can't look at him without thinking of his TEAM AMERICA counterpart,feeding Hans Blix to the sharks. Still a scary prospect though. Though it's been said they haven't yet the capability to marry up the warhead with their long range missiles.

i don't think anybody will advocate that N K should have nuclear weapons. What the fook is a country that can't feed its own people doing spending mega bucks in developing nuclear weapons anyway. Kim has to go. I just don't see how.

If N K gets bombed then watch out South Korea and Japan. This just puts into perspective just how wrong W. got it, now that the US forces are tied up in Iraq.

No I won't go into the reasons why the Iraq war was wrong here. I think I have more than adequately covered those in other threads.

Spotted a story in The Times yesterday caliming the seismic shock was so low, because they'd teste a neutron bomb, namely one concerned with creating a LOT of radiation and a small blast, a truly horrible weapon, drop one, and 3 days later, roll unopposed into a nearly untouched city.

Can't see it but, I seem to recall they are quite the tricky buger to build.

The sensible thing to do is stompt the cunt flat before he can build more and stick them on delivery systems.

I tell you what scares me about NK...... So mr "so ronery" chucks one at the USA maybe? The USA will chuck all they have at NK.....sadly the Americans couldn't hit texas at 2 feet range, and will therefor hit China. I believe that would constitute "Game Over"

Back to North Korea: I hope that someone stops KJI. He better not launch his nukes to Japan; I have family there...

When there's news about North Korea, it's personal.

I'm sure the CIA is working on a "grass roots" movement of fed-up citizens to topple that government as we speak.

Actually, if enough soldiers are fed up, there may be a military coup in the works already. Rumor has it the soldiers along the northern border get more supplies from the Chinese than from back home.

The country is already in very bad shape. Strict rationing of power and fuel have taken a severe toll on city life in Pyongyang. And they're very protective of what news actually makes it out of the country so I'm sure we don't even know the half of it.

The key to fixing this problem is getting China to cooperate. They're the only ones who seem to want North Korea to continue to exist as it is, so it's kinda up to them what gets done. They have condemned the tests and I'm thinking they'll agree to cut back on aid. I don't think they'll go along with a Western takeover, though. At least not yet. All bets are off if Kim is crazy enough to lob one at somebody, though.

It's a delicate situation to be sure, and should be handled as such.

Well... The Chinese will try to demonstrate to the West that the UN route can be followed successfully - they will do enough behind the scenes to NK to hammer the point home.

From what I read NK is militarily very strong relative to the South and the US forces in the area. Seoul is about 30 miles across the border and an easy target within range. There doesn't seem to be a military option right now - there's no guarantee of a 'considered' response from NK to any action against it.

People are looking for China to take the lead, its in their interests and an opportunity for them to act on the world stage. The one country keenly watching how this pans out will be Iran.

What about Greenpeace ? I have not heard anything about them about the subject...

China to cooperate with the USA...? They already have a strong hold on your economy - I am not a financial specialist but they keep loads of US dollars and financial deals with the Central bank of the USA (just in case of, say, an eco-diplomatical way of pressure)... So I think that they will never agree with CIA operations on North Korean soil.

On the other hand, I also read somewhere that Chinese soldiers are on stand-by alert by the North-Korean border. In my opinion, they will try to keep a statu-quo... (you know, just like the Iraqi embargo not long ago, erm...) + they fear a huge arrival of Korean citizens in a part of the country where they already are a huge minority... No good for the stability of this part of China.

I saw Perez de Cuellar on TV yesterday. Asked on the subject of the Korean reunification, he said that it was strictly impossible in matters of economics. South Korea has not enough money to pay the bill and is not part of an economical identity as Germany was when they integrated former DDR within the EU (ECC, by the time).

So... I wonder what can change...

Latest reports that the US has refused the Japanese proposals to prohibit North Korean ships from entering any (Japanese ) port, and any North Korean aircraft to take off or land in any country. These sanctions are likely to face both Russian and Chinese opposition.

Resolution to freeze all assets related to North Korean weapon's and missile programs. But a call to freeze assets from other illicit activities such as 'counterfeiting, money- laundering or narcotics was dropped. hmnm. The limits on all imports from North Korea to Japan is likely to effect the NK economy so quickly that it may even give pause. If not involved with any military lifestyle then it is manufacturing. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said UN action 'should be conducive to the de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula.. and the resumption of talks.'

whereas North Korea has been demanding direct talks w/ the US but President GW. Bush has refused. GW siting the need for diplomatic measures before military use.. Close to 30,000 troops on the ground residual from the 1950-53 Korean War.

Korean Institute of Nuclear Safety has, so far not detected abnormal levels of radioactivity in South Korea.

i had a dream last night that i met kim jong il. i had to take an elevator about 1000 feet up inside a giant statue of kim until we reached the head part, which was his office. he was pretty nice, but rather dogmatic.

that would be the beautiful paradise of pyongyang. it was a nice place to visit in my dream, although a bit empty. i'm even surprised they have that many lights there.
