Probably Parkin for me, but in God's own it's available all year round, so fireworks (air bombs)

I'm going to smash up my shed this afternoon, then burn it round my mates house next week.

You're going to smash up your SHED????? Col, had you not noticed that there's a large number of very scary, never-leave-their-computer-types round here who whould burn you atop a fiery pile for that kind of behaviour????

I haven't been to a proper display for years, but I seem to remember at school that bonfire night was largely an excuse for sneaking off from the main event and, with the distant fireworks and blazing fire creating a gentle light amidst the darkness, getting your hands inside a girl's pants.

Forget burning Papists: there were more important matters at stake.

I'm goading them

And you're quite right - the aphrodisiac effects of the smell of singed eyebrows and mulled wine cannot be overstated.

I saw Nenah Cherry at a bonfire once, but I didn't put my hand in her knickers.

Do I win £40?

Funny, we have ours at the other end of the year, and for utterly different reasons, but ultimately, that's what IT comes down to and all.

And yeh the followers of the shoe did burn tragicly cheap dummies of the followers of the gourd.

Mind you, I suspect your version doesn't border on a mass Klan rally likes ours.

The best thing is setting off incredibly large fireworks in a dangerously small garden (esp. with small children around). The night also usually includes setting a wheelbarrow on fire and blowing up pumpkins

It's a real family occasion:laugh:

What event are you talking about? A national holiday I presume?

For God's sake.

Bunch of zealous Catholics tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. They failed. Every year in the UK on Nov 5th we have a big bonfire and lots of fireworks as a kind of compensatory version of what could have been if the fuses had been lit.

Fucking hate Bonfire night, mate of mine was killed on November 5th 30 years ago, and I have not celebrated the day since then. Fuckers who buy fireworks should be shot.

Guy Fawkes 1605

Try here.

I like this Parkin business but the Bonfire just edges it. We'll probably attend an official display. Too many knob heads round these parts otherwise.

Sorry to hear that, I have to say I'm in favour of organised displays only, and no private sales of fireworks as I have seen too many people hurt in my lifetime. Funny that your friend died as my sister was born, it's her 30th this year.

my favourite thing about nov 5th is the smell!, all the burning and the firework fumes.

waste of time if you ask me. And Halloween as well. Just an opportunity for people to come up to me and try and get my money. Bastards.

Used to love it many years ago before it started lasting for several months at a time. As you can imagine our two dogs aren't too happy about the twats who keep setting them off at random all day and night for weeks before and weeks afterwards. As ever, It's the dickheads who always spoil it for everybody else. My wife Lorraine had one thrown at her car a couple of years ago - and it was in fucking September!! Since then she has been double edgy about the fucking things. :mad2:

The government should tax them heavilly (for the noise and environmental damage to the atmosphere) if they had any sense. Letting off explosives that people can freely buy is a huge liability if you ask me. :nonono:

Thanks PHD and Doc Martin, I know I sound like a stupid Yank when I say this, but I had no idea the concept in V for Vendetta (which is the only place I ever heard of Guy Fawkes) was an actual holiday. Seems a bit morbid for the kiddies to make thier own Guy to throw on the fire.

How much of the population partakes in this? Do you get the day off of work?

No,you dont get a day off work (its not an official holiday),think Halloween and your on the right track. Kids love it,and adults tend to make an effort to spend the night doing stuff with the family,fireworks,bbq,etc..

Most people get the day off this year 'cos it's on a Sunday :thumb:

Absolutely right. Havn't done anything for Bonfire Night or Halloween for years. Both a bit shit!
