Academic Freedom and Rights in UK: For those who've done advanced degrees in UK (Time for Fradders to actually be useful)

Someone told me that if I were to do a doctorate program in the UK that the university would own my thesis...

I never heard of such a thing and it's not the most reliable source so i want to know if this is true

I think technically that's true but in reality it means nothing.

[EDIT: but before you fuck off, I think it's also technically true that any undergraduate work becomes the "intellectual property" of the university as well, but given that they keep this stuff for a year and then burn it I don't really think anyone takes this very seriously. Isn't there an alleyway in Shrewsbury where, technically, on a certain day of the year it's legal to kill a priest?!!?)

When you submit your thesis you would normally also have to fill in a form signing over copyright on it to the University, so they have the right to reprint and reference it blah blah. Same as if you were submitting a paper to a journal to be published. Its still yours in the sense that you are the author and that they can't quote from it without referencing you at the same time. But you can't submit it, have it accepted by the Uni and then later go and publish it yourself and make your millions from it as a bestseller. You have to change a few sentences first to be able to do that...

Maybe our favourite IP lawyer in Kansas is the lady to ask for chapter and verse?

So when I started mine in the US I didn't have to sign anything, but I guess it makes sense that it's when you submit it. I just never heard of it... that's cool tho thanks

Most dissertations are only ever read by the markers after which they are condemned to a life of dust gathering... I wouldn't stress it... You could always ISBN it which is cheap and easy...
