International Space Station Visible At The Moment

For the next few days, the ISS is low orbit. This combined with the darker evenings in the northern hemisphere makes it visible to the naked eye.

Click HERE and enter your location to find out when it will be overhead. When the table comes up, 'mag' refers to the brightness, the higher the number the easier it will be to see.

The LOWER the number the brighter ;)

Heavens above is also amazing because it predicts iridium flares....which are very impressive to behold.

Those are the reflected glare of the sun on the solar panels of the iridium series comms satellites, and if you get a good -7 or -8 one, it's like the sun coming out for a second in a pitch black sky.

Tell Heavens above exactly where you live and it'll give you exact viewing angles for anything cool up above. But you just HAVE to see the flares.

For those too lazy to mangle the above link to get to the Heavens-above homepage....

Have you seen an iridium flare? If not, make it your business to, there are several this week.

Been listening to Low-Life yesterday driving in my car back home. This Time of Night is a high ... (for watching ISS at my location)

That's when the sun reflects off the spacecraft's antennae, yes? Not seen one but I'm aware of the phenomenon.

All the stuff I work on is earth observation and has a higher orbit, occasionally visible in the night sky but not as spectacular.

Not really that glamourous...

However the European weather satellite METOP A, wot I worked on, was launched two weeks ago and the particular instrument I spent ages building and testing (the Microwave Humidity Sounder) was switched on and produced it's first image yesterday. Hopefully the Met Office will have accurate rainfall prediction data from now on.

Someone should make a note of that one - a clear candidate for 'tone-lowering post of the year' in the NOOL years honours list.

Tone lowered? It was a reasonable question. The answer is yes, of course...
