IRAQ'S High Tribunal last night found Saddam Hussein guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death by hanging, as the visibly shaken former dictator shouted "God is great!"

His half-brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of the former revolutionary court, were sentenced to join Saddam on the gallows.

After the verdict was read about 7.30pm, South Australian time, a trembling Saddam yelled: "Life for the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!" He initially refused Chief Judge Raouf Abdul-Rahman's order to rise. Two bailiffs lifted Saddam to his feet and he remained standing throughout the sentencing.

As the proceedings finished, clashes broke out between police and gunmen in north Baghdad's Azamiyah district, dominated by hardliners from among Saddam's fellow Sunni sect. In contrast, celebratory gunfire rang out in many other parts of the city.

The verdict was immediately condemned by the head of the second largest Sunni bloc in parliament, who predicted it would spark even greater bloodshed between Sunnis and the country's majority Shi'ites.

as expected. still raises some questions. was he convicted violating laws of iraq? don't get me wrong he gets no support from me. i like to see things done right.

The Iraqis need this to move on as a country. I'm glad he wasn't sentanced to life in prison. The fear Iraqis still have for his mere presence of breathing is astonishing. Saddam may be old news, but this is a giant leap for the Iraqi people.

absolutely. no doubt he would have been found guilty in the hague, but this trial was shi'ite.

now that iraq's nice and stable, we can get the hell out of there, right?

That maybe, however the Sunnis and Kurds were deftly afraid of his return to power. There will be more fighting, but the past is wiped away and gives them more of an ability to move forward.
