Songs You Love In Ads...

How do you feel about hearing one of your favorite songs used to sell something like a car, a shampoo, or a herpes treatment?

I bring this up because yesterday, while in the waiting room of the optomotrist to get my annual eye exam, I couldn't help but notice that one of the ads on the ubiqutous "optomotrsist TV station" they had used the opening from Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye" on a loop to promote some nifty pair of eyeglasses.

Needless to say, I was put off by that :nonono: (but I guess the Buckleys need the cash, maybe)

Anyway, feel free to share your own horror story (or non-horror story, if you didn't mind a favorite song being used for the promotion of bourgeoisie captialist greed) :evil4:

The Bloc Party song "So Here We Are" in the Sky convertible commercials.

It's crum-believable.... :barf:

actually the original song is terrible too, but the worst thing HAS to be that Maxwell House commerical where they make up new words to Madness' "Our House." Christ, makes me change the channel every time the godawful POS comes on.

I really love a song by a band called The Caesars (or it has the word in the band name at least) when the iPods came out.

Well Bowie's Heroes is an absolute classic, but I did get sick of hearing it on a Microsoft advert a couple of years ago . I felt really disapointed that bowie let the song be used like that.

On the plus side the BBC did a sort of "look how great we are" type promo/advert thing a year or three back. It was about how they cover live music so well (do they?). It had some great imagery of a crowd bouncing up and down in slow motion, someone splashing along the floor of the flooded bogs and so on. They used "Girls" by Death in Vegas (from the excellent Scorpio Rising LP), and it just worked so perfectly. I actually went out of my way to catch the promo as often as possible!

BTW Sofia Copolla subsequently used the same tune in Lost in translation, so she's got good taste in music if nothing else.

Not helped by lotsof channels on Sky synchonising their ad breaks.

Personally, I just hit the OFF button when the ads are on.

I do like Aphex Twin's window licker being used in I think a Merc ad, and Donkey Rhubarb used to be used in an orange comercial ( wee cartoon man running around to music that sounds like steel drums on acid)
